I think Keavon has an opportunity to be a very, very good player. He is young and won't be in his current role throughout his career but I would disagree with him being the best 6th man. While he has a lot of upside to him, currently you have to have a kid you can rely on to be there night in and night out for you. Rice has had some major struggles this year that has limited his productivity. He needs to work on his attitude and ability in order to be truly listed as a top 6th man. I mean this as no disrespect to Keavon because as I stated he will be one of the better players in years to come but right now he isn't there yet.

 

Tucker gets my vote. He is a tough kid and contributes to that spark that has Newport as a legit contender in the 9th.

 

The above could also be said for Tucker though. His attitude led to him not being apart of Newport's team for several games earlier in the season.

 

He's tough, but I think Brown of Boone or Rice of Holmes would be the better 6th man than Tucker.

 

Rice averages 7 ppg off the bench on a loaded team and Brown just brings it every night. Brown could average a double double...no doubt about it.

 

I really like Alex Connelly of Covcath as well. How does that kid not start?!?

I agree, Trevan would probably be a starter on any other 9th region team around here. As a sixth man, he does provide Boone with some great energy and trouble for defenders. I believe he is just behind Gabbard as the teams second leading scorer and his rebound stats are up there also. The key as you mentioned is that he doesn't take attitude for lack of playing time or not starting, he just goes in and gets the job done at a very succesful rate for a sixth man. The kid gets my vote...hands down!

Those stats alone for Brown and Montgomery makes you wonder why they weren't considered for 6th 7th or even 8th man last year with Boone.

Ask anyone around nky that has seen Rice last year and this year and they'll tell you that mentally this kid has made tremendous strides and really grown up.

 

Look through every Holmes thread on this site from this season and I guarantee you don't find one post about him having a negative attitude or off the court issues.

 

As to why he isn't starting anymore, I can assure you it's not attitude related. Herndon gives them a true point guard and allows Ricardo to play off the ball more. By bringing Rice off the bench, you also have more depth down low, as you don't have your two biggest players in the game at the same time.

They both played JV last year (because of their Sophomore status) and IMO both deserved more playing time on varsity.

That's a very good point you're bringing up. Rice may not be the best 6th man, but it does appear he is becoming a better man.......which is most important. :thumb:

I wouldn't blame it all on coaching.

 

Last year Boone was very deep with upperclassmen:

 

Seniors: Brown, McFarland, Spalding

Juniors: Earls, Cotton, Gabbard, Popp, Schultz, Lay

 

Who on that list should Brown and Montgomery have been playing over? McFarland was one of the biggest reasons those two didn't play much varsity. He rarely came off the court.

 

Both spent their sophomore years developing at the JV level and it's obviously payed dividends as both are having great junior seasons.

 

Boone made it to the region championship without those two playing, so tough to question the coaching. :thumb:

I have watched him play a few times this year, he really hasn't shown me anything thats impressed me this year. He plays sloppy and takes forced shots.

Rice didn't play well last night he does force stuff but i have seen him have good games, i just think with the Tucker kids all around play not just scoring he's the best sixth man in the ninth.
