Up on my soapbox:

 

The Freshmen and the JV NKy Regional Championship games were played Saturday night to a very nice size crowd at CovCath. In fact the size of the crowds surprised me and other considering the games went up against the UK vs. Vandy televised game.

 

Now to the best of my knowledge there were but two HS games other than these two championship games being played last night, yet I can't for the life of me, find a single word about these two Championship games in either the NKy.com or KyPost.com.

 

Have these at one time great local newspapers gotten so sad, that they no longer cover the local HS games?

 

Yes the games were Freshmen and JV games but they were indeed the Championship games and at least IMO the newspapers could/should have shown up to take a couple of pictures, like they seem to do every weekend at the local bars around Cincinnati in the Metromix section of the paper!

I am as big a sports geek as anyone but I have a hard time seeing why the Enquirer would cover these games. Maybe a blurb in sports notes in the next day or so but not much more. JMO

These games are not that important in the big picture!

 

It's a nice accomplishment for the kids and the program that wins but since the younger players who are truly talented almost always play on the Varsity level, these games really don't mean that much for the future IMO.

I work for a newspaper company, the day they start covering jv and freshman games, I stop reading. Remember old guy, they would have to cover jv/freshman boys and girls: volleyball, soccer, swimming, diving, tennis, golf, football, baseball, cross country, track and field....etc. The staffs of our newspapers are thinner than the paper itself.

I think the fact that nky.com and other community paper sites allow you to contribute your own stories and photos probably is the reason for this. Newspapers are not going to pay someone to cover these games.

 

TOG you do such a great job of reporting on these games as far as the stats, etc. Maybe you should write up a nice article and post to one of those sites.

 

Its hard to get good photos during these games unless you have a nice camera like Panda does and you can take good shots. For a championship game you would think someone would show up whether it be a fan or a family member who has a nice camera and could take some cool shots.

 

Then you have BGP where you can get a lot of good insight into these games and reports from the fans. Some are biased and others are factual but there are a heckuva lot more outlets today then there were back in the pre-internet days.

I too will echo the above sentiment that if submitted the papers would publish at least a barebones account of the games and the box scores.

 

When I was a freshmen coach I always gathered up and submitted freshmen scores and tournament results including the all-tournament teams.

 

These always got published. It might have been fine print but they were there.

 

Newspapers are not going to send reporters to cover the Freshmen/Jv tournament BUT if informed, and as stated, it is a slow local sports night the TV stations might well send a cameraman for some 11 O'Clock news footage.
