Knox County doesn't renew Reciprocal agreement with Corbin

Featured Replies

Corbin & Knox Central have always been rivals. Since they moved Knox out of the 50th district. This situation may have just stirred everyone up. I hope whatever is done is for the kids and not for someones social standing.

What areas that are annexed, if any, will be the areas where a certain majority of the homeowners sign a petition which states they want to be annexed. It will be up to the state school board to draw the lines for the actual boundaries. I went through this several years back when Corbin was awarded the Whitley Co. area and it was not determined by economic status, but by geography.

I hope it does not come to this, but the precedent is there and the situations educationally, at least statistically speaking, are eerily similar. This would hurt the Knox system economically, but it could also serve as a wake up call, as it seemed to do with Whitley Co.

is located.

If more people knew about this law, a lot more district boundaries would change.

Corbin released info today that there are over 400 kids who live in the Knox District and attend Corbin, which is the number that I have always heard anyway. Will this affect the Education Commissioner's ruling? If so, wonder which side it helps?

I think that both Corbin and Knox BOEs could be the losers in this battle. Both are going to spend large amounts of money and resources on fighting this battle. Which of course will translate into students losing. But there could be some winners, although not in Corbin or Knox County. I find it interesting that Knox BOE made the decision to not renew the agreement with Corbin when they also have agreements with Bell, Whitley Laurel, Barbourville, Williamsburg and other systems. If it were truely about money would they not end all the agreements? I think there is more to it. Corbin has the better school system between the two, but now Whitley is an attractive alternative rather than pay the tutition, and I have heard this from several parents who may end up with their children at Whitley or South, at least till the case is settled.

Some say that education is all about effort implying that if a child tries he will do well and many times that is true, but you need the leadership from the administratioin and teachers, which looking solely at test scores they do not get get at Lynn Camp or Knox Central. While Corbin and Whitley continue to improve, they are both providing solid leadership in administration and in the class room, based soley on test scores.

Put the petty differences aside and start focusing on the education of the students. If it is about money start cutting areas other than education and put the money in education and then you may see results which would not cause families such hardships as changing schools or paying tutition.

Too bad St Camillus doesn't still have a High School then you could have a Public - Private argument here too .

I know it is off topic but I have a question after reading the link you provided.

For example, in Boone County the city of Union is adjacent to the Walton-Verona school district. Can the citizens of Union vote to become members of the WV school system? If so what would happen to the school buildings in Union? Would they now become part of WV system or remain with Boone County school system.

They ( the school buildings ) are owned by Boone Co now and Boone Co they would remain .

The Education Commissioner rules that Knox Co. must allow the 406 kids currently in the Corbin Independent District to remain in the Corbin system under the "grandfather clause". I'm sure that the Corbin parents are thrilled with this decision.

This is what Knox Co. should have proposed in the first place in my opinion.

Do you really believe Corbin will be content to stop there?
