Rules Question

Featured Replies

Player A is fouled in the act of shooting. On the way to the free throw line to shoot his two free throws, Player A gets a technical foul. The technical gives Player A his 5th foul and of course fouls him out of the game.

Does Player A shoot the free throws before going to the bench?

Saw it once at the Fieldhouse and they let the player shoot first. Of course maybe they were wrong.

My best guess, and this is only a guess is the player would shoot the free throws since the free throws are the result of a foul and the techinical occured after that foul. After the free throws he/she would sit.

The disqualified player could not shoot the free throws. The coach would choose a replacement for the disqualified player and that player would shoot the two free throws.

Clyde is correct. When the technical occurs is irrelevant. Once a player is disqualified, he/she cannot continue to participate in the game. The free throws are "owed" to the team, not the individual.

That makes sense as well. Thanks for the clarification.

OK lets take it to the ridiculous....what if player A was the last eligible player leaving only 4 after his foul out. Would one of the four remaining players be allowed the free throws?

Yes. You only have to start with 5 players. A team can play with less after the game starts

Got one right there Clyde ... Great job

Coaches often say that to me as well.

Quietly, and with great reverence, right?

Should I be bothered that they emphasized "one?"

The Coach of team that has player A picks who will shoot the foul shoots, then shoot the "T" and team "B" takes the ball out at the division line.

:notworthy:

No, maybe should have said "another one"

That's a college rule. I don't think there's any provision in the high school rulebook that the opposing coach chooses who shoots the FTs.
