Would eliminating the bye week solve 2 problems?

School also used to start after Labor day so the kids could work on the farms.

I can't remember that and I'm 46.

The football finals were during Thanksgiving weekend for many years until a few years ago.

Great idea! Only let the top two teams in the districts in the playoffs. It used to be that way until somebody decided it "wasn't fair"

It was a idea then when 10-1 and 9-2 teams where missing the playoffs and it is a bad idea now.:ohbrother:

December-February

Basketball has been cut short by a week. They did that last year. Non-football schools before 2002 could play before Thanksgiving.

They can't do that anymore.

Oh I see Basketball got cut short and now you want football season cut short as well, may be football can have 8 or 9 games and just maybe for the awful championship teams they should play 6 to 7 games in the regular season, because we all know they take to much time to win the championship, after all we live in a basketball state.:ohbrother:

It's too bad it turns into the football-basketball debate. I like both of them, but I like it best when football is September, October and November and basketball is December, January, February and part of March.

So it's okay for football to be confined to 3 months but Basketball deserves better?

You sure about that? I seem to recall Trinity in 2003 playing games without a number of starters because football season had yet to wrap up.

Basketball seasons have always been a little longer.

I think basketball is 17 weeks (counting two state tournaments), maybe 16 this year. Football, I guess, is 15 weeks.

I just think Thanksgiving weekend is the best time to wrap up the season.

Wrong.

You have to go way, way, way, way, way, way back to when finals were played on or before Thanksgiving. I'm talking 30+ years back, if not more.

Many good points on here. Dont' shorten the regular season 10 games fly by way to quickly.

I am sort of torn on the playoffs as far as everyone playing. Round one could be easily eliminated as many games are blowouts anyway. However as far as football being too short of a season I dont buy that for a second.

Its basically year round, Spring Practice, June(whatever thats called which includes the 7 on 7) and then the real practice starts in the middle of baseball season. Ya I know same for basketball and the pull from AAU and taking up the month of June as well.

I agree. Personally, I wish they would do away with all this summer basketball and 7 on 7 crap. Have it for maybe the first couple weeks in June, and make dead period the whole month of July, at least.

So it's okay for football to be confined to 3 months but Basketball deserves better?

In actuality, football goes from mid-August to early December, basketball from December to early March. Kind of a wash if you ask me.:idunno:

If basketball is 17 weeks and football is 15 weeks I don't see the problem. Basketball still goes on longer and football fans who don't care about basketball get to have a decently long football season.

Wrong.

The State Title games were a week or two before the Male/Manual game when it was on Thanksgiving Day.

Matter of fact Eastern forfeited the state title to Male in 1960 because it didn't want to wait two weeks for the City Champion to be decided. They also didn't want the footballers to miss the start of basketball season.

Back then all of Jefferson County was the entire class 3-A, there one district with all the city teams (Manual, Male, St. X, Trinity, Flaget, Central, Bishop David, Atherton, DeSales, Iroquois and Shawnee). The County teams were divided into two (and later four as more schools opened) districts and had sub-playoffs. the County winner played the City winner for the 3-A title. The entire rest of the state were either 2-A or 1-A. This format was used from 1959 through the 1974 season, the following year 4-A was born.
