How do you know it's not a war we can win?

 

How long the Soviet Union wasted lives and money there finally to just leave. I don't know if it was on here or where I read an article about a former officer that served in Afganastan. He stated that as Ace did this is a tribal war or valley war as the former officer put it. This valley may support you and the next one over the hill may support the Taliban. I'm all for going after Bin Laden if he's even still alive, but think special forces in covert operations should be the ones doing it.

To think, for even an instance, that you can educate children to not hate Americans when Wahhabism is in such control there is laughable. You're a good guy, ace and it would be nice if that were possible, but it's not and will only get worse when we pull out of the region.

I just spoke to a guy two days ago that has served in Iraq, he was an Intel Officer. He believes that General McCrystal can an will win this war. I'll take his word over anyone on BGP, nothing personal.

Certainly misread your post, those places at least understood how to be run by a government. They had better road and communication in the 40s than Afghan has now. It is a wild territory that is not ruleable (???) by a central government - we are just too stubborn to admit that.

If we build schools, water movement plants, roads and bridges - which we can do better and more quickly than the Taliban, then we begin to win over the hearts and minds of the people.

 

Really, read "Three Cups of Tea" it is very powerful. I read it because I am an educator and it was about schools, but it is certainly much more powerful than that.

I'll try to give it a read but I will tell you this, you vastly underestimate Wahhabism. They want nothing more than to see the world revert back to the 18th century. They'll have no part of what you are talking about offering and the rest of the region is too scared of them.

A book that I do intend to read when I get a chance, however, I really don't believe you can reach these people. Those that go against them end up with a face full of AK-47 fire or they and their family end up with their throats slit. This is what we're up against.

Didn't Hitler have ideas that his race was the dominate race and he wanted to eliminate the inferior races? Or something to that effect? Was that military war won against ideas?

 

The wars that US have lost is the wars that it seems that the politicians did then what is happening now. They didn't let the generals fight them but rather fought the wars politically.
