Vote on The Arena will happen before January, 2010

Featured Replies

The meeting that is scheduled for Nov. 30, will allow each high school rep of the 13th Region to fine tune details with The Arena. A decision won't be made on that day(the 30th).

Also, on a side note, there is also another proposal that has been drafted that basically involves a rotation of the nine high schools in the 13th Region that is capable of hosting the tournament.

Who is behind the new proposal?

I'd be in favor of having it at the arena for three years and at Harlan County High School when it's the 52nd District's turn.

Not me ... Let the Arena have it every year. I'm being selfish on this one. No way I wanna drive 2 hours when I can drive 5 five minutes.

OK, back to being serious, I agree with you HDE.

Wow all schoos were to share 13th regional money since 1994. Wonder how much money that would involve over 14 years? If 17 schools only were to get 500 dollars each year(I would guess the cut would be higher) thats 8,500 dollars per year for 14 years thats 119.000 Why would the schools not have this info.? May be a lawsuit waiting to happen with this.

They said it was the wording ....

I know the Harlan folks are proud of their new gym (and I dont blame them)but, this is the 13th Region Tournament with 17 schools and not 1. The current hosting system is completely unfair to the smaller schools. I advocate for each school to have a vote in holding the tournament at The Arena. You should not be penalized for having a smaller enrollment. I also propose that the next meeting be held at The Arena so school representatives can view the facility first hand.

They have had SEVERAL meetings already and each representative were invited to the Harlem Globetrotters game months ago .... no reason to advocate for each small school to have a vote BECAUSE THEY DO. Each school in the 13th Region has a vote.

They do now...

They've always had a vote ....

All of this Arena talk is a bunch rubbish. We build a facility capable of hosting this tournament and after the fact of us spending millions of dollars on such facility, someone has the bright idea to centralize the location? Not in my lifetime if I have anything to do with (and I probably will not...lol).

If The Arena had never been built this would not even be an issue. Our school was planned and construction began before "The Crystal Palace" was ever considered. The people of Harlan County, our facility, our economy, our taxpayers, and our kids deserve the opportunity to host this tournament and we will not stand for this EVER.

How about this for a plan...Draw a line in through the center of the region. The schools in that end that have not the facilities, either rotate contract with other schools or The Arena to host, and Pineville & Harlan (if they so choose) rotate contracting with Bell Co., Middlesboro and Harlan County or The Arena.
