Okay heres my view.

 

Will it benefit Corbin more than anyone else in the region to have it at the Arena? Yes it will. It will help the area, the city, and yes, the school.

 

Does it benefit small schools who don't get to host the region? Yes it does. It gives them more money and in general does away with home court advantage.

 

Will it be nice to have a big arena without split sessions and good parking (I'm assuming on the parking)? Yes, for the media and its a great venue I understand.

 

Does it benefits schools like Harlan Co, Knox Central, Bell Co, South Laurel, and Clay Co? Probably not as much. They look forward to hosting the region every 7 or 8 years. So that is debatable.

 

Does it take away from the excitement of having the region at the high school? Yes I believe it does. I saw the layout of the gym, although I have never been there it appears the fans are way off the floor and takes away from the excitement of having the fans so close to the action. The way I see it, it has its pros and cons, so I don't believe its a no-brainer decision.

It's a Corbin thing to me. Home floor or not, it means every regional game is a home game for Corbin. No Thanks.

 

If Corbin has ever won the region when it was held at Corbin, it had to be back in the 1940's or 50's...................When was the last time the host team won the region?

 

It should not be a Corbin thing, even though it clearly is to some of those opposed. It is a forward thinking thing in my opinion, if Harlan Co. turns out to be clearly better than any other site, then I think it should remain there. The best site should be where the tournament is held. I agree with HDE, Harlan Co. should get an opportunity.

So, it's OK for us to travel to the road to get to Corbin, but it's too dangerous for the Corbin folks going in the other direction?

 

Why don't we just build up Harlan instead and let Corbin benefit from the expanded growth?

You posted a picture of the layout on the original thread about having the regional tournament there. In the picture there is a big gap between the bleachers and the floor. I assume more seats will be put in, but usually seats are angled to go higher so everyone can see and this wouldn't seem possible in the layout of the picture. I am interested to see how close the fans are to the floor when they have games there and see.

You can't do that when you're two hours away and meeting a deadline ... but The Arena has wifi ...

Harlan County does have Wi Fi. It is throughout the school. It also has a section at the top of each side of the gymnasium that is built in specifically for the media, with all the wiring already built into the structure. It also has wiring in place along the floor for broadcasting. The school also has a broadcast studio with a "green screen" allowing the students to produce and broadcast on the local tv cable. Digital Security systems are throughout the entire school. The school has been recognized nationally for it's technology.

That was just the floor layout. When Scott County plays South Laurel in the Coal Classic at the arena go check it out.

If it has WIFI then that is awesome. That will make my job a whole lot easier. Wished all high schools had WIFI.

With respect to "the Breezes" comments, we did build the school for educational purposes, but I am betting if we knew we would never have the chance to host a regional tournament, the possibility exist that the gym might have been smaller.

 

I'm sorry if my comments offend anyone, but it is a bit offensive to us to even hear discussion on this topic. We see communities like London, Corbin, Somerset get all of this political financial support for the upbuilding of their communities, much of it comming from coal severance dollars, then someone comes up with the bright idea that the one event we get host every 7 or 8 years to showcase our community and school should be moved to Corbin.

But The Arena has been built, too. It's time to get up with the times. 11 Regions play in a facility that compares to The Arena. It's time for the 13th Region to do the same, and to be honest, the Crystal Palace thing makes no sense at all.

 

Let Harlan have it once every four years and go from there.

The meeting that is scheduled for Nov. 30, will allow each high school rep of the 13th Region to fine tune details with The Arena. A decision won't be made on that day(the 30th).

 

Also, on a side note, there is also another proposal that has been drafted that basically involves a rotation of the nine high schools in the 13th Region that is capable of hosting the tournament.

 

Did this meeting happen? Did anything substantial come from it?
