Or, do you think Cooper can beat Beechwood??? I don't know? I've seen Cooper, they look like one of the best freshmen team in NKY. Any class. I have not seen Beechwood, and haven't heard much about them. Should be a great game.

I've heard Beechwood has two big backs that play very well. This may be their chance for an upset as Cooper had at least 5, two way starters, out of practice last night due to either injury or illness. Cooper's depth will be tested. I'm just ready to watch them play after having last week off with weather cancellation.

Coming from someone who knows very little at current about either freshman team, all I can say is I know Beechwood is very limited in numbers and depth. I can only assume from the size of all the Boone county public schools that Cooper isn't lacking in numbers.

It seems to me that based on the relatively undeveloped talent level of freshman football as a whole, the size of your team and the ability to throw as many players as possible at the other team is often the key to victory. I'm not going to guess at who wins in the end, but I see it being a tough game for Beechwood.

It has been extremely tough for the smaller schools to compete with Cooper's depth. They have a very big and talented team plus twice as many players to work with. Beechwood is well coached and may keep it close early, but Cooper's depth should be the difference in this game.

I know some coaches do not let players start if they miss practice. Do you know what they do at Cooper? And with Beechwood having turf it shouldn't get rained out. Will the winner of this game get home field for the play offs? And is the small school freshmen play offs like the big schools?? E1 vs W2 and W1 vs E2. with the winners playing??? Thanks

I am just going by hearsay so who knows. It is freshman ball. But I would say Cooper is the clear favorite in this game. NCC beat Beechwood (22-18?) and Cooper beat NCC somewhat handily after a tough first half. So if you want to play that score comparing game, it looks like Cooper should handle Beechwood. Beechwood has a very good core of players and the two backs are probably as good as any two freshman backs in N. Ky. Beechwood does have 20+ players on the team but the backups and even a few of the starters are 7th and 8th grade players, and I doubt Cooper has anything other than freshmen on their team. That makes a difference. Several of Beechwood's starters are playing football for the first time this year or are playing for the first time in several years. Beechwood's backs could make some plays to make this a game or even pull off an upset but Cooper is probably going to win by a couple TD's or more.

As to the playoffs, I don't think there is an east and west in the small schools. My understanding is they are just going by the standings and splitting the top 4 into one playoff bracket and the bottom 3 (it would be 4 but Lloyd has no team) into another bracket. Then every team gets two more games. 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3, then the winners play each other and the losers play each other. The same happens in the bottom of the standings.

I would assume the higher seed gets home field. But if Beechwood beats Cooper, I believe that would put Cooper, Beechwood and NCC all with one loss with the losses against each other, so no head to head advantage. I guess if BW beats Cooper and Holmes beats Cooper Monday, then NCC would be first because they beat BW head to head. I think Holmes is the #4 seed regardless of what happens this week.

That (22-18) is the correct score.....I believe BW would like another shot at NC......They lost that came in the last 36 seconds.

Does anyone know why Cooper was permitted to play with all the smaller schools? From everyone posts, it seems that Cooper has the advantage in this game only because of their (6A) size. I hear that their 8th grade class is just as talented (and the numbers large) as this year. I hope they do the right thing and play in the larger divison.

Just from what I read in other threads. It was the A.D. and head varsity coach fro Cooper that wanted to play with the smaller schools. On what was going to be an off week two weeks ago they did play a great game against Scott County, a good 6A school and won. Maybe the same could be asked why Scott High Scools is in with the small schools? And why did Beechood play the big schools last year and the small schools this year??? :idunno:

I can't honestly say if there is a rule on if you miss practice. The injured players have been there but unable to participate. The ill players of course were not there and I'm glad they weren't. There is practice today so hopefully some will be back. If Beechwood is having to play 8th graders then I think Cooper will be fine regardless (although stranger things have happened). They could always let Centers play since he is a freshman and likes to play with his friends but I'm not sure they would do that if they expect him to play varsity this weekend. Centers was our #1 back and then our #2 back rolled his ankle on Monday. Our 3 and 4 backs are very good as well though. We lost our starting TE/DE maybe for the season and our OG and LB was out but may be able to play. As long as we have our QB, Morris, we have enough athletes around him to be fine.

I agree with you about Scott....As far as BW last year, they dressed 30 freshman last year and felt they could play with the bigger schools. This year is a diffrent story (more 7th & 8th graders) with only about 8 freshman coming out to play football. I don't believe that the general public have a problem with smaller schools trying to better theirselves by playing up....At least not as much as the large schools playing down.

It was unknown how many would actually play freshman football so the head coach made the decision to play smaller schools and get a more fair schedule, but that wasn't the case.

Even with the smaller numbers, I wouldn't be surprised to see Beechwood play with the big schools again next year. I think Beechwood likes the competition. The lower numbers scared Beechwood this year so they moved to this new small school division. You don't want the kids to be totally overmatched and non competitive. But as the season has developed, things are ok. Just knowing the Beechwood program, I could see them saying they would rather win 4 games and play tough competition every week versus playing just 2 or 3 competitive games in the entire season, as has been the case this season. I think most Beechwood supporters are glad Cooper is in the small schools division because they want to play the tougher competition. If you lose a freshman game, no big deal. It is about playing tough competition and getting better so you develop a varsity state championship team. You don't learn much beating teams 40-0.
