Scribe's Week Three Notebook

After taking the week off, we get back to thumbing through the notebook...

 

 

Caleb Watkins rushed for 224 yards and four touchdowns to lead Corbin to a 31-14 win over Danville in the Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic. Corbin rushed for 293 yards in the contest, averaging 7.7 yards per carry.

 

Boyle County’s Rees MacShara ran for 124 yards on just nine carries to help Boyle County blister Pikeville 63-7 in the other half of the Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic in Corbin. MacShara ran for two scores and returned an interception 28 yards for a third.

 

Prestonsburg quarterback Michael Burchett accounted for all four of his team’s touchdowns as the Blackcats shocked Breathitt County 26-25 in the Honey Bowl. Prestonsburg trailed 25-7 before rallying for the win. Burchett was 24-of-36 passing for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for two other scores, including the game-winner. Breathitt County’s Channing Fugate ran for 251 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Tyrell Willis, who missed the first two games of the season, returned to action with 114 rushing yards on 23 carries to lead Calloway County to a 28-17 win over Trigg County. Jaron Gilbert picked off a school-record four passes for Trigg County, including one for 90 yards and a touchdown that tied another school record.

 

Speaking of interceptions, Carroll County’s Danthony Collins picked off a pass in the end zone and returned it 102 yards for a score against Ludlow.

 

Eric Shaw rushed for 116 yards on 14 carries and caught four passes for 68 yards as Lafayette beat Mercer County 28-7. Brett Durbin completed 11-of-16 passes for 170 yards as Lafayette handed the Titans their 15th loss in 26 games since winning the Class 2A state title in 2006.

 

Junior Jack Tencza ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns to help Trinity beat Manual 27-0.

 

Cooper’s Dvontae Bailey rushed for a school-record 268 yards on 28 carries as the Jaguars beat Scott 28-27. Bailey is averaging 11.6 yards a carry this year.

 

Perry County Central’s Jordan Amis was 5-of-11 passing for 116 yards and three touchdowns as the Commodores routed Knott County Central 57-6.

 

Fern Creek trailed 21-7 after 12 minutes of play but rallied for a 56-35 win over Seneca. Junior Jerrell Moore ran 10 times for 255 yards and scored on long runs of 80, 72, and 34 yards. Tai Jarrett added 118 yards on just five carries as the Creekers rolled up 501 rushing yards.

 

Covington Catholic quarterback Brayden Erpenbeck was 21-of-42 passing for 232 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 162 yards and three more scores in a 44-35 shootout loss to LaSalle (OH). The Colonels are 10-17 since winning the 2006 state title.

 

Junior Alex Davie’s debut as Christian County quarterback was a successful one as the Colonels hammered Henderson County 47-31. Davie, who transferred to Christian County from Clarksville (Tenn.) Northwest over the summer, ran for 197 yards and passed for 141 yards. VaShun Banks ran for 128 yards and scored on a 74-yard pass from Davie.

 

Fairdale’s Bradley Vincent threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort as Oldham County beat the Bulldogs 27-12 behind 100-yard rushing nights from Brett Leary (131 yards), Tyler Oldham (105 yards), and Kirk Yepko (102 yards).

 

Cameron Smith ran for 193 yards and four touchdowns to lead Spencer County to a 31-27 upset of Frankfort, who was playing without star Quan Weaver.

 

Sophomore Marcus McMillian ran for 130 yards, and T.J. Green added 128 yards on the ground as part of a 415-yard ground attack for Harlan County in their 44-21 win over Lee, Virginia.

 

Scott County rushed for 380 yards as they surprised Boone County 30-14.

 

Nick West was 15-of-20 passing for 351 yards and four touchdowns and added 106 yards rushing and two more scores as Conner thrashed Lloyd Memorial 64-0. Michael Gill caught three passes for 106 yards and a score.

 

Ashland Blazer’s Trey Rogers ran for 113 yards, and Josh Alber added 106 yards as the Tomcats upended Belfry 22-20. Thomas Varney rushed for 218 yards for the Pirates, who fell to 1-2 with the loss.

 

Somerset’s Erik Manning was 16-of-26 passing for 220 yards and two touchdowns as the Briarjumpers beat Russell County 40-20 and improved to 3-0 for first-year coach Rob Lucas.

 

Henry Clay rolled up 556 yards of offense in their 42-7 win over Southwestern. Jerry Williams was 16-of-30 passing for 173 yards and three scores and ran for 139 yards on eight carries.

 

Bishop Brossart’s Bruce Bowman ran for 136 yards and two scores as the Mustangs got their second straight win, a 38-0 shutout of Bracken County.

 

Chris Kelly rushed 34 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns to lead Newport Central Catholic to a 38-12 win over Madison Central.

 

Lone Oak’s Cameron Looper threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing score as the Purple Flash hammered Marshall County 55-0.

 

Glasgow is 3-0 for new coach Rick Wood after beating cross-town rival Barren County 35-14. Sophomore Parker Cash ran for 149 yards and Tavion Parrish added 137 yards on the ground.

 

Newport’s Demetri Brown was 14-of-20 passing for 290 yards and four touchdowns as the Wildcats beat Pendleton County 35-14.

 

Bardstown quarterback Keaton Hall was 15-of-22 passing for 246 yards and four touchdowns in their 42-20 win over Bethlehem. J.P. Willett hauled in eight passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers.

 

Will Bardo was 15-of-25 passing for 295 yards and three touchdowns as Highlands hammered Beechwood 48-20 for their 16th straight win dating back to last year. Nick Buten hauled in seven passes for 165 yards and two scores, and Austin Collinsworth ran just eight times for 161 yards and two scores. Beechwood is 0-2 for the first time in over a decade.

 

Bryan Station’s Tevin McCaden continued his torrid start, rushing 24 times for 224 yards and five touchdowns as the Defenders beat Tates Creek 35-18. Bryan Station is 3-0 for the first time since 1993.

 

Pulaski County has been hit hard by injuries in the first two weeks of the season. The Maroons have lost quarterback Chris Muse for the season to an ACL injury. His replacement, Zack Eastham, threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns and added 90 more yards on the ground and two scores to lead Pulaski County to their first win of the season, a 35-30 win over East Jessamine. Cameron Thomas ran for 166 yards for East Jessamine.

 

Monroe County’s Jackson Arnett connected with Neil Wilson on a school-record 90 yard pass on the game’s first play as the Falcons beat Adair County 45-14. Arnett finished 6-of-8 passing for 228 yards as Monroe improved to 3-0.

 

J.D. Gray ran for 140 yards and threw for 60 more as Crittenden County dominated Hopkins County Central 35-6, never allowing the Storm to cross midfield. Brian Berry added 101 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Hopkins Central’s lone score came on a kickoff return for a TD.

 

Campbell County’s Michael Kremer threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Camels to a 31-28 win over Roger Bacon (OH).

 

Still hobbled by an ankle injury, Miles Simpson ran for 186 yards and five touchdowns to lead Simon Kenton to a 49-28 win over Dixie Heights. Quarterback Chad Lawrence joined in the fun, passing for 201 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for another 119 yards.

 

Five games to watch this week

 

Lexington Catholic at Lone Oak – These teams met in the 2007 state title game, which resulted in a Knights blowout win. The Oakers are averaging 58.6 points a game, while Lexington Catholic is giving up 33 points a contest against much tougher competition. Don’t expect a 7-6 score here.

 

Central at Male – No shortage of athletes in this one as the two traditional Louisville public school powers square off.

 

Danville at Somerset – Another interesting contest pitting two small school traditional powers. Somerset is 3-0 for first-year coach Rob Lucas, while Danville is off to an uncharacteristic 1-2 start.

 

Belfry at Letcher County Central – Old rivals Hillard Howard and Phillip Haywood reunite again Friday. Belfry is off to their first 1-2 start since 2001.

 

Kentucky vs. Ohio – Three interesting matchups Friday featuring some of the best of the Buckeye State against the Best of the Bluegrass.

 

X marks the spot as Cincinnati St. Xavier travels to Louisville to face the Kentucky St. Xavier. Cincy St. X is 2-0 with impressive wins over Colerain and Indianapolis Cathedral.

 

Manual visits Colerain in a battle of winless teams who have combined to play perhaps the toughest schedule in America.

 

Elder will host the Shamrocks of Trinity in a classic showdown of big city powers.

Actually, according to the official stats, Corbin rushed for 305 yards against Danville and Watkins had 228 yards.

Bell County vs. Whitley County has to be a game to watch this week. According to Mountain Top 10, No. 1 team against No. 2 ranked team.

North Laurel is off to its first 3-0 start since 2001.
