What is your solution to gambling?

Featured Replies

If you had it your way how would you like the issue to be handled?

Personally I think local governments should be allowed to vote on how much gambling they allow in their community. That way the areas that don't want it don't get it...but they also don't get any of the profits.

I see it playing out like this. Louisville, NKY, and Lexington plus all of the Catholic strongholds in the state will allow expanded gambling. The predominantly Protestant areas of the state won't allow it.

And yet the societal costs of the program would fall on the shoulders of all KY taxpayers.

What societal costs?

And more importantly, what is your solution? Would you do away with gambling in the state completely?

Maybe a mod could remove the word "expanded" from the thread topic and we can discuss gambling as a whole in the state.

Because we should be legislating morality and moral "decency" right?

We should make anything bad for you illegal, because we obviously aren't going to make the "right" decisions. Anything that you can get hooked on, or enjoy to the point where you sacrifice other things in your life should be illegal.

Good lord, the Mr. Rogers crowd in this place is starting to get even more irritating.

Pep,

You know I agree with this totally.

I would really like like to hear what you have to say on how the state should handle gambling.

I would like to see a plebiscite that would ask one of two questions:

If people would be in favor of allowing expanded gaming at racetracks.

If people would be in favor of allowing individual counties to make the decision regarding gaming in their own areas.

This is an issue that affects Kentucky across the board. If the horse industry goes, many jobs will likely be irreparably gone from Kentucky. I don't care about horse racing one way or another but I am getting sick and tired of hearing people who live in a Mr. Rogers fantasy world about the way people "should" be while throwing bible quotes out at me dictating how life should be handled.

I don't care if rural Kentucky gets gambling, if they don't want it then they shouldn't get it. You don't have to allow something in your community if you don't want it, it is that simple. Those people however having a disproportionate say in what happens in regards to Louisville and other areas trying to shore up important industries is absolutely infuriating.

I don't remember saying that. Please don't put words in my posts that are not there.

No, but you are implying it.

If it is a danger to society or is too high a cost to society where does it stop?

What practical basis do you have to not want this to be legal or to at least give people the choice outside of your sense of morality?

"It will damage families"

That is pretty much bound to happen in any situation. Weak minded fools who cannot control themselves are more or less always guaranteed to be a problem be it with gambling, alcohol, World of Warcraft, D&D or anything else that can be addicting. Unless you plan on doing away with those then we cannot justifiably keep this one out.

What else are you basing it on?

No, but you are implying it.

No, you are reading into it what you want to read in to it because that gives you a reason to justify your opinion.

From your posts, I am not allowed to have a opinion unless it jives with your view of the world and the justification and values you make your opinions on.

View that way if you want, that is not my intention.

All baiting, real or imagined, aside. What is your reasoning?

I was going to put my 2 cents in but it's pretty much been said already by either Pep or fkyw

I put that in the other thread where it belongs.

This thread is about solutions.

Do you have a solution? In the other thread you said you wanted a long term solution. What is this long term solution?

I will announce that at the press conference when I run for governor and would appreciate your vote.:eyeonyou:

I alluded to it by saying we have to be serious about controlling spending and make hard cuts that do away with non-essential spending in this country and state.

What does that have to do with giving people a choice, supporting a signature industry, and keeping jobs in the Commonwealth?
