June 8, 200917 yr If the workers have contracts the Union negotiates a new one. In the Railroad workers get fired quite a bit, and the Union gets their jobs back and if their are meetings between the Company and the fired worker they are trainned to do that. Without an Union the company can tell someone to hit the door, and they will lose their job. Safety issues, legal Reps. Bosses who disfavor certain workers like me once. I had a guy who just hated me...he could not just go up and fire me. The Union would protect me and this is the biggest issue to have Unions.

Safety is one of those areas where over the years, unions did help the worker. However, my brother in law was a supervisor at a union shop and they could not fire a couple of really bad workers who had violated company policy on more than one occasion. Even the union steward stated that 2 of them absolutely should be fired, but the union enabled them to stay. After that, he said that they were even lazier than before because they believed that they could never be fired.
June 10, 200917 yr Unions are bad. I worked for a hospital chain that had a union. I was not in the union but a lot of people were and one night at midnight all of the nurses simply walked out on their patients. Also the steelworkers at the hospital had a seperate union and they went on strike for 3 months. Unions are bad enough when they involve plants and factories but I couldn't believe caregivers walked out on patients.

June 11, 200917 yr I don't know about Kentucky, but in Florida, an Open Shop state, reported violations are investigated by the state labor board. These are state laws, not civil matters. Believe me, I've benefited from and have had to deal with violations of these laws and have seen their applications. It's no different than the Fire Marshal coming into a facility and finding violations. The company has to take on the the state, not an individual. But someone still has to bring up the issues. Most often this issues are never even brought to light until an employee has been fired or laid off, because they in most cases, people don't want to make waves, especially as individuals.

Now I do understand the reasoning behind there actions, they see themselves as advocates of ALL employees no matter what. I however am of the belief that if they were to take a more Spock like approach (the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few) they would much better serve most workers and benefit the company as well. Now I clearly support the existence of unions, but I think this policy to protect bad workers is a major error and is cause of much dismay even among many/most union members.
