Track the Red Sox (Week 5)

After losing 3 out of 4 to the Rays, who just seem to have the Red Sox number right now, the Sox make their debut in the new Yankee Stadium. After a 2 hour rain delay a Pedroia walk, Papi double and Phil Hughes wild pitch gives the Red Sox a lead after 1/2 inning. Jon Lester then strikes out the side in the bottom of the first. The game is on ESPN.

The Yankees put runners on first and third with one out in the 2nd but Lester strikes out Cabrera and Molina (both looking) to end the inning. Lester with 5 strikeouts through 2 and the Sox lead 2-0.

That is now 35 homers in only 10 games at the new stadium. And there was a "Let's Go Red Sox" cheer going pretty good there for awhile. This is definately different than old Yankee Stadium.

Papelbon makes it interesting by loading the bases in the 9th inning but he blows away Robinson Cano to close it out, 6-4. The Red Sox move to 4-0 against the Yankees on the year and win their first game at the new Yankee Stadium.

The Red Sox got their second series sweep of the season against the Yankees tonight 7-3. The Red Sox got 4 runs in the first with 3 singles and a 3 run homer by Jason Bay, who has just owned the Yankees. (still hate that trade, Wireman?) Beckett goes 6 innings and allows 3 runs--all on Johnny Damon's 3 run homer. The Red Sox get 2 scoreless innnings out of Okajima and Saito pitched a scoreless 9th. The Red Sox are now 17-10 while the Yankees drop to 13-13.

This has to make me wonder just how bad George Steinbrenner's health is. The Yankees are now 0-5 against the Red Sox this season and were 6,000 short of sellouts each night against their archrivals. It is early May but when The Boss was running the team someone's head would have already rolled or there would have at least been a public tirade.

Anyway, nice bounceback from last weekend in Tampa. The next 5 are at home against the Indians and Rays.

Have you noticed you were talking to yourelf in this thread lol. I've said all along I just don't think this Yanks team or Sox for that matter are as good as the teams they have had in the past. They both have the stars to win it all but I don't think either is overly impressive. It's going to be interesting to see how ARod puts a jolt or dark cloud over the Yanks. I think it will be a jolt but Posada on the DL doesn't help. I still think they need a starter and move Joba to the set up man. CC, Burnette, Hughs +1 with Joba and Rivera makes the Yanks a lot better team IMO.

I think the Sox have a lot of good starters this year but not quite the pop at the plate. Bay, Yuk and Pedoria are solid but Poppi has to get things going for them to be a contender I think. I think Papelbon is really good although the Yanks took him pretty deep last night.

Should be another fun season. It's kind of fun to see teams like the Jays (Halladay is the most underrated pitcher in baseball), O's a lot of young talent with the best catcher in baseball sitting there till June + Rays all cranking up the heat.

I'm anxious to see how the Blue Jays do when they really get into the AL East teams. They've looked great so far but they haven't played the Sox, Yankees or Rays at all yet. The look like they could be for real though.

I'm not too worried about Papelbon, he did go 1 2/3 innings last night for the save and his control was a little off but he hadn't pitched in almost a week. However, his fastball was back up over 95 after being around 92-93 earlier in the year. I think he's getting stronger.

Their offense has been pretty good. They are 2nd in the league in runs per game. Pedroia, Bay and Youkilis have been very impressive so far but don't forget about Mike Lowell who is leading the team in RBIs with 26 so far and seems to be suffering no ill effects from his hip surgery. Remember, he drove in 120 runs in 2007 and really was the team MVP. Also Ellsbury and Drew have gotten it going after slow starts. The offense might not have that awesome 1-2 punch of Papi and Manny like it did before but they have hitters all up and down the lineup and get production in spots 1-9. Also they are getting ready to get Rocco Baldelli and Mark Kotsay back which will greatly help out their bench. Dice-K had a solid start in AAA tonight and shold be back in the next week which will move Masterson back to the bullpen and strengthen what is already probably the best pen in the league. Its a long season but 17-10 is a very strong start considering they have played 12 of those games against the Yankees and Rays.

I think Boston is better on defense/field but don't have as much pop at the plate. Elsbury can scoot too!

I really think the Rayes are going to be even better if they bring Prince up to pitch in June. That guy is awesome!
