I don't follow the reasoning for a blind draw. It would seem that it would only be wanted by those schools seeking to gain an (unfair) advantage over the actual seeding which they deserved/earned. Dayton and Newport having the opportunity to win one game and advance to region is wrong. They should be the "play-in" game (#4 vs. #5 seeds). Someone explain to me why I'm viewing this incorrectly.

It's pretty obvious as to why they woud rather it be a blind draw. If there were seeding the odds of them going to the region decreases. With the blind draw they have more of a chance of only having to win one instead if two.

Do the other NKY districts vote every year on whether they want to seed or have a blind draw? Frankly, I find it odd the KHSAA even allows this. Why would it not be mandated to be consistent within a region?

Now you can say what you want but...............is it fair to blind draw? maybe not but the flip side is that is it fair to not have classification? probably not.

 

So.....in this district you will never have seeding.

Isn't Newport actually the second largest school in this district? What is their justification for voting for a blind draw? In this particular district, they would fall into the "have", rather than the "have nots", category attendance-wise.

 

As far as classification issues, while it makes sense to do so overall, these smaller "disenfranchised" schools still have the All "A" in which to participate. And it's not as if seeding would eliminate them from participating in the district tourney. It would just give them a first round game commensurate with what they earned during regular season play.

IMO the KHSAA needs to have either seeding or blind draws throughout the entire state. They need to decide one or the other.

I would at least think it should consistent within a particular region. Since KHSAA is the one who sets up the districts, regular season district play should count for something.

 

For this year's tourney, theoretical #2 seed Bellevue has to knock off the theoretical #1 team (NCC) for the right to advance against a team they've beaten 3 times this year (Newport). Odd.

Not saying it is not there fault but that is the reasoning to vote that way........... Yes and this year Bellevue would be a 2 seed.....but 9 out of 10 years they are a 3-5 seed.

No Newport thinks they can not compete on a yearly basis. Otherwise they would vote for seeding. I am not making statements about teams. Just the philosophy of the school as it pertains to seeding.

Only having to win two games to win district is a good thing for Newport this year. They are capable of win two in a row with the pitching they have. They have steadily improved this year. It is obvious why they would want to draw for seeding. Look at Bellevue and Dayton's records over the last 10 years and it becomes obvious why they would also.

When it comes to district play, it is anyone's game to be won or lost. This year they all have the chance to emerge as the victor. Good luck to all teams, they are all a fine group of young men.

Actually, these days you may be surprised to know that Newport's enrollment is, give or take a few, just about the same as NCC's. The tearing down of a lot of low-income housing forced a lot of students into neighboring cities resulting in a sharp decline in students a few years back. The numbers haven't bounced back.
