Do you remember when the fad was to wear dashiki's and change your name to one of African origin? That was when it started. That was in the late '60's.

 

I also remember what you are talking about. My father would get upset if someone called him black.

I understand that but I was just explaining how the term originated.

Showing my age here, but I remember when it went from colored people,my grandparents used that, to negroes, to blacks, to African Americans. Man we've come along way in 50 years, but still have a ways to go.

I really started this thread because I wondered if other countries sounded as ignorant as we do sometimes by using the hyphenated system that we do. But, I like how the discussion developed.

Every Easter I get to attend a church in North Carolina where a lot of the African-American parishioners who wear dashiki's. They have such a regal look to them :thumb:
