When did players stop getting tall and start getting long?

Featured Replies

I guess some players are "sick" because they have "hops", I don't know this is something like mumps or what, but I hope they get over the "hops" soon.

":madman: Hops" are a little more serious from what a doctor told me. "Mad Hops" seem to get worse when players get the symptom of being "wet". I am not for sure if it has anything to do with the humidity in the air but players really enjoy being "wet".

I prefer a good clean jersey.:D

So is a long player a tall one whose knuckles hang below the knees or scrape the ground?

Coaching in Florida several years ago I was fortunate to coach 2 players who were 6-3 (not necessarily very tall) but one had a 6-9 wing span the other had a 6-8 wing span, so they were both long. This year coaching junior college had a 6-9 player (yes somewhat tall) with a 7-6 wing span (yes EXTREMELY LONG). So there is a difference. Not sure when the measuring of wing span came about though.

So, long basically means long arms? Can a person be short from a height standpoint, but still long?

What would that be? Lort? Shong?

Wouldn't you rather have length. Assuming two players have equal "hops" aren't you more interested in how high a player can reach with his arms over how tall he measures at the top of his head. Don't you rebound, block shots, shoot and play defense more with your arms than your head (physically speaking)?
