Final. Senior Cory Woods did hit his first HR of the season for the Royals. Boone jumped out 5-0, but the Royals did manage to get the tying run to the plate with one out in the 7th before the Rebels shut the door.

Boone County is playing very good baseball at this early stage of the season. These guys hit the ball very well and find ways to score. Young pitchers are coming around just fine and gaining the experience necessary to make a run at the end of the season.

Great To see Coach Huff having these guys off to a great start. He is going to do a great job

Right now I'd have to rank Boone and Lloyd as the surprise teams in the 9th. I don't think many people thought Boone would come out firing on all cylinders the way they have. Will make for a very interesting 33rd district . . . .

Boone leading in this one 5-0, Mason with a man on 3rd (and maybe one on 1st, I can't remember), one out. Batter lines into an out, the runner for Mason obviously thought there were 3 outs and tossed his helmet towards the dugout.

 

Umpire did not call the 3rd out, but I couldn't hear his explanation. Anyone? Mason did wind up scoring twice in the inning; for a while it looked like this one was possibly headed towards a mercy rule, but the play actually seemed to pick MC up.

Removal of batting helmet while ball is in play results in warning by the umpire. Second offense results in ejection.

 

However, if the player while removing his helmet had appeared to have abandoned his base (even if he somehow managed to return successfully), he should have been automatically declared out.

The runner on third base ( obviously thinking it was the third out) takes his helmet off and slams it down ( not a toss, but a slam where it takes two big bounces). He then starts to walk towards the dugout and his coach who is visibly upset with his player gets him back on third base. There he stood with no helmet? The Boone coaches question why he is not out? The umpire said that the runner thought it was the third out and the runner did not take his helmet off out of frustration? What? you've got to be kidding me? The young man slammed this helmet to the ground in frustration at the time the ball was still in play then went back and stood on third base without a helmet?

 

Anyway, I dont have a rule book but the umpire later told me as he was reading his book and said " I got that one right"? I said which one? The play at third? He said; if the player unknowingly takes his helmet off thinking it was a third out and not out of frustration that its a warning. If its out of frustration..then he is out? I asked him; " Did you see the play"? He didnt answer? So I responded by saying well you guys did a good job! Because other than that call both umps called a good game. I'm sure Masons coach had a few coaching points for his runner at third.

Although, I would expect that the player needs to walk more than a couple of short steps to be declared as abandonment. Not sure without seeing how far he walked before reversing course.

mcpapa was also right in saying the play picked Mason up! They did come to life after that! Boone subbed out pitchers and closed off the comeback. Mason County's shortstop and second baseman made several outstanding plays in the infeild as well.

Thanks for the clarification. I really think had the umpire been watching the player at third he would have called him out! But again, I don't think he saw it and I know they can't see everything all the time.

A low strike zone doesn't bother me as long as the umpire is consistent throughout the game. This way hitters know where the strike zone is and Pitchers can select pitches based on the current strike zone of the day!
