March 26, 200917 yr I would hope that I could discern between a pitbull that was a threat to the well-being of my family and my neighbor's labradoodle (for instance). Again, if I thought for one second that my kids were in danger, the last thing thru that dog's mind would be lead.

Again, if I thought for one second that my kids were in danger, the last thing thru that dog's mind would be lead. Can you discern between a pit bull that is a threat and a pit bull that isn't a threat because it sounds like you aren't even considering that. Some of you have made up your minds that all pit bulls are all evil, all the time. That's not the case. Again, you're more likely to be attacked by a poodle than a pit bull. Want some proof? "According to the American Canine Temperament Testing Association, 82.5% of the American Pit Bull Terriers that took the temperament test passed, compared to a 77% passing rate for all breeds on average." 82.5% is the 4th highest passing rating among ALL dog breeds. That means that Pit Bulls, as a breed, are better tempered than the majority of all other breeds on average. The problem is, Pit Bulls are an extremely loyal and eager to please breed, and some bad owners know this and use it to train them for the wrong purposes. Since 1975, dogs belonging to more than 30 breeds have been responsible for fatal attacks on people, including Dachshunds, a Yorkshire Terrier, and a Labrador Retriever. That's right, a weiner dog killed somebody and that labradoodle you mentioned...well it might not be so friendly. :/ Since 1998 the breed most responsible for fatal dog attacks has been the Rottweiler, not the Pit Bull. Some more facts: There are 4.7 million dog bites every year; on average 12-15 people die from dog bites per year. Of the fatal dog attacks, Rottweilers were the most commonly reported breed in the attacks. Only 0.00001% of all dog bites result in fatalities. Did you know more people die annually from drunk driving than dog bites? But it is not the alcohol that is inherently dangerous, it's the abuse and misuse of it. Just as it is the combination of neglect, criminal intent, and purposely training the dogs to fight that can result in ANY, and I mean ANY breed of dog being dangerous. To close, I will state again that I don't think these dogs (any for that matter) should be roaming around the neighborhood without supervision, but the extremely bad reputation that pit bulls have is not warranted. March 26, 200917 yr Great stats. However, the original post said that a dog, one of the two, chased them. If that happened again, the dog would die, it really is that simple for me. If there were consequences, sobeit. Frankly, I was in a similar situation with 2 dogs that were "dropped off" next to our house several years ago. And though it was of no fault of the dogs, they chased my kids into the garage, because they were too close to a deer that had been washed up in the creek after a big rain. I watched it with my own eyes. I dropped both of them like a hot rock, end of story. On the other side of the coin, have you seen what dogs can do to kids? I mean do we really have to put the pictures here? I'm not an animal hater by any stretch, I'm a dog person frankly. But any threat to a child by a dog can't be tolerated. And I'm sure there are statistics that show that there are instances when even normally docile housepets can inflict harm, this ain't that! So, I stand by my original opinion that Nees has handled this the right way, but there is a point when you just may have to take matters in your own hands when it comes to the welfare of your kids IMO. By the way, I suppose he's not talking about drunk drivers in his neighborhood, however, I suppose that the authorities might take that a bit more serious. (By the way Nees, don't shoot the drunk drivers)

Hopefully the OP gets this problem resolved and everyone lives happily ever after.

Hopefully the OP gets this problem resolved and everyone lives happily ever after. I don't live in Covington, Lexington, nor Louisville. I live in the country. Good luck trying to get any official to deal with a "pet" problem. You're lucky to get an officer there within 2 hours of a break in. Again, I wish Nees success in resolving his issue for the safety of his family.
March 26, 200917 yr I talked to the neighbor that had the run in with one a few weeks ago. All accounts of these dogs seem to occur on the weekends. I'm still waiting to hear back from the local authorities. As for animal control/dog catcher, they only work Monday through Friday 8:00 to 4:30. Outside of these hours, we're suppose to call the police, but only for emergencies. That makes a whole lot of sense to me. :irked: The prime times people have run-ins with animals is evenings and weekends, but the dog catcher doesn't work then. :ohbrother: On a side note, last night I watched a special on the wild hogs running around in the south. The dogs used to hunt and take down these 200lb hogs...............pit bulls. Thanks for the info. I can esily see your frustration in getting something done. Don't stop, make these people (police/animal control) so sick of seeing and hearing from you they will have to do something, if for no other reason to shut you up,lol. Also, are there any local radio stations, t.v. stations, newspapers in the area that might do a story on this and your frustrations? I don't think the local authorities would like any bad press or public exposure on this, just like has been on this thread imo there would be an overwhelming number of people in support of you. These dogs are a threat to you, your children and pets. They are not restrained or with an owner and running around at will in places they could harm and yes, could kill you and/or your child. You have went to the proper authorities and gotten no results. I would protect myself and my children at any cost..........Shoot Them:thumb:

The parts of this post that I have picked out describe my thoughts perfectly. "pop a cap" on them, is not even a question with me. Nees, you have went through the proper channels. I admire that but have gotten no results, JMO but that would leave me with the one and only solution . (On a side note and I realize that this is no laughing matter but I can't help bu lighten things up a little and say....Give Michael Vick a call, I am sure he would be interested in these dogs.LOL) Good luck to you Nees :thumb: and please keep us posted.

I left a message for him the other day. I've gotta wait for his bankruptcy thing to go through first. I did speak with the local police department today. The lady I spoke with was very nice and very understanding. The complaint has been filed with animal control. She said to keep calling if I see them loose. She couldn't fill me in on any other complaints or any information, but she did let me leave a voicemail with an officer to get more information. I'd really like to know how many complaints they've received and who owns the dogs. As for shooting the dogs, I'd be in a load of trouble firing a gun in the subdivision, unless it was an act of self defense. Even then, I'd have to probably show a bite mark or something, to prove that I fired in self defense.
