IMO it will be one of these 3 to cut down the nets next year but there will be a lot of teams that could play spoiler and knock them off such as Eastern, Ballard, and Warren Central, to name a few.

 

I believe Christian co returns a lot next year as well?

Phares meant alot more to SC than people give him credit, I seen them 2 games with out him this year. One was against Holmes when he got in foul trouble early and didn't play hardly at all, SC lost, then against Lex Cath in the regional final... Again a loss. Phares was huge for SC this year. Dom, Housley and Jamel will certainly hurt Holmes but we are talking about 3 players who developed into solid role players after being non existant on the runner up team in 08. It is easier to replace these role guys than a stud like Phares.

 

Once Phares went down Scott Co. started 2 very good freshmen. I look for those 2 to be very good next year to go along with Scott Co's other players.

Holmes will be hard to handle though. I am very impressed with how much better Rice has gotten.

 

J'town is another team that will be very good next year as well.

Big difference in losing a guy unexpectedly when you aren't prepared vs. knowing that from the get-go and having a whole summer and several months of the season to get someone ready.

 

I'd go with Scott County at #1.

 

Also, I think Shelby Valley should be in the top 5.

Who does SV return? I know Hatfield, Justice, and one of the Newsome boys were underclassmen, but who else?

Shelby Valley returns some nice players, but will have no depth and little size next year. They will still have a good team, but not top 10 in my opinion.

 

SV returns plenty next season. They lost three seniors (two starters).

 

Devan Adams, 6'10, C - 10 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.1 bpg

Logan Bryant, 5'10, G - 6.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.8 apg

Curby Tackett, 6'7, C - 5.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.7 bpg

 

Returning...

 

Elisha Justice, 5'11, G - 17.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 5.1 apg, 3.6 spg

Ashley Hatfield, 6'6, G - 12.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.7 spg

Taylor Newsome, 6'3, F - 8.6 ppg, 8.5 rpg

Tyler Newsome, 6'5, G - 7.7 ppg, 3.2 rpg

Cody Varney, 6'1, G - 4.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg

 

They have a couple of guys who are 6'5 who saw some PT this year, along with a few others.

 

Considering they return one of the top PG's in the state (Justice), their two best players and their leading rebounder, along with a couple of strong contributors from the bench, and a couple of guys with decent size...I'd say what they have coming back is better than the majority of the state. They should be a contender again next year.

The only thing they take a big hit on is shot blocking, but as I said, they return a couple of guys who are 6'5 that should be able to step in and give them some inside presence. They won't need a ton of scoring from them anyway. I like what they have back.

I've always been very impressed with those two, especially Justice in the All A and state tournament. I think the Newsome boys may be the X factors for them. I believe one or both of them will be playing for Team Kentucky over the summer which will help prepare them for next years' high school season.

 

Hopefully Coach Boeher (sp?) will add a few more top 20 KY teams to the schedule next year. Would love to see them play some of the L'ville and Lexington powers.

I heard Justice was playing for Derek Smith again?

 

I was referring to the Newsome boys playing for Team Kentucky. Last I heard, both would be playing for them, but things could have changed. I've also heard it's down to Derek Smith and Team Kentucky as to who Justice will play for over the summer.

I think Scott Co. will again have the most talent in the state, but I would not go against the Johnson boys and Pittman. They also have a very good player in the Rice kid who would have started for many teams in the state.

I do think they'd benefit from taking the schedule up another notch. They've got a good core coming back. They have a pretty good shot to be one of the top rated teams in Rupp again next season.

 

They need the big guys to provide some solid presence with defense and rebounding and it wouldn't hurt if they had some young talent that could give them some quality depth so Justice and Hatfield could get some rest when necessary. But, almost every team has some questions to answer heading into a season. I'd say not having any questions at PG or SG is nice, and throwing in your leading rebounder to boot can't hurt.

I agree. Having solid guard play will take you far in HS basketball. Just look at Elliott Co this year. Perfect example.

Dont be surprised next year if you see a little of Christian McClendon as well. He was an 8th grader who may not be ready to run the point at the varsity level but he can flat out shoot the rock. I wouldnt be surpised to see him play a little 2 guard for the dogs. He will be a big threat from 3, maybe not as good of a shooter as Riley yet but he isn't too far behind.

 

Nice young player with good upside but may be a little extreme on his shooting abilities. I saw him play in the freshman tournament. In this particular game he shot 2 airballs from 3 and also banked one in. Christians game is more of a slasher/scorer. He can get to the rim most any time he wants.

To say he "isn't too far behind Riley" may be a bit overboard!
