I am going to disagree somewhat. SK losses a ton. Im not sure how they are going to score points next season. Wainscott, Brown, and Ponzer are not scorers. They will all score some, but all three played off the Tolliver and Smith really.

 

The one thing they will do is defend though. Ponzer is a great defender (when she's not fouling). I think they will be in the mix, but they will just be too small to deal with South Oldham and Oldham. If im not mistaken they will start 4 players that are 5'5 or shorter (im guessing this to be Browns height). But it's a rebuilding year in the 8th. Everyone outside of the Oldhams has major flaws IMO.

In this region they are still in the mix and with three state experienced players we cannot count them out. After all hold a team to 40 or less and you only need 41. Keep an eye on Wainscott :sssh:. The neat thing about the region is that there is probably 7 or 8 teams that feel they have a chance this season. It's been a long time since the girls side has had so much pairity.

Here's my pre-summer look at the region:

 

The FAVORITE

 

1. South Oldham- The Lady Dragons return the most talent in the region. They have a strong, talented and now experienced group of sophomres to go along with Mcguffin, the embattled senior leader each team loves to have. They will play hard and I expect them to be the class of the 8th region. Their main weakness could be shooting, where they struggled mightily in the region. They were "exposed" somewhat by Walton and Anderson in the regional tournament. Mcguffin is probably their best outside threat, but someone else needs to emerge to stretch the defense. If they can, watch out.

 

 

The CONTENDERS

 

2. Oldham County- The Lady Colonels will certainly miss Audri Beaudrie at the point, but she is the only loss off a pretty talented group that made big strides last season. Emily Lape returns as the leader of a talented trio of seniors including Leanhardt and Pehlke. The Lady Colonels biggest question mark will certainly be ball handling and offensive firepower. Lape can score, but you have to get her the ball. Leanhardt and Sophmore Emily Melton can provide the outside threat, given they get free. Beaudrie was their creator and if they can find another guard who can get in the lane they are going to be tough to beat. They should get familiar with South as they will probably play twice before the regional tournament.

 

3. Owen County- This is where it gets tough. Owen gets the nod here because they have the front runner for region POY in Gayheart. Owen played Oldham very tough in the regional last season and returns a lot of the same kids this year. They obviously are built around Gayheart but if a legit no. 2 scorer can emerge they are going to be tough. The knock on Owen last season was if you could slow Gayheart Owen couldn't score. If they can find some more points, they could challenge the Oldhams for the regional crown.

 

4. Shelby County- The Lady Rockets were a disapointment in coach Zimmermans final campaign. Coach Z will be sorely missed but at Shelby County expectations are high every season. The new coach won't get much of a break if things don't go well. I think the Rockets will respond. The only real tangiable loss is Lecompte, but she had a disapointing senior campaign as well. The Rockets return 4 really solid guards and 3 of them are seniors. Dee Dee Davis, Taylor Shaw, and Marrissa Raisor lead the talented and experienced group. Leeara Cardwell played a lot last season as well and certainly showed flashes. Freshman Phenom Aaliyah Wells may hold the key, however. She is going to have to draw attention and rebound the basketball, as well as defend the "bigs" of the region. She certainly has the talent, and if she puts it together Shelby will be dangerous.

 

5. Simon Kenton- The 2 time defending champions will most certainly miss a very talented Senior class headed by Tolliver and Smith. They return 2 starters (Wainscott, Ponzer) and 6th man Brown. After that Simon is somewhat of a mystery. Blevins is coming off and injury and Pace saw limited varsity action a season ago. Simon's biggest challenge will be size. They are small at almost every position. The guards are undersized, as well as the posts. Scoring in the halfcourt will be an issue as well. Wainscott is a talented facilitator of the offense, but she is going to be counted on to score points next season. If Brown can give them consistent production in the post and they can get solid contributions out of their role players Simon will once again be tough. They always bring it on defense and that will be a key to just how good Simon is going to be.

 

 

The WILD "CATS"[/U]

 

6. Anderson County- The Lady Bearcats lose 4 seniors from a season ago. Lindsay Fultz and Tiffany Davenport will certainly be missed as they accounted for over half of the points a season ago. The theme for this team will be youth. The projected starting lineup includes two 8th graders (Cann, Mckee), a Sophmore (Brown), a Junior (Mcdowell), and a Senior (Yeaste). The bench is even younger with the key reserves all being 7th, 8th and 9th graders. These kids may be young, but they are VERY talented. Brown is the most ready to star. She has all the tools and size to dominate inside. If she can, Mckee will find room to operate underneath as well. They key for the Lady Bearcats will be the guard play. Yeaste will provide a steady senior hand out front but the other guards are a bit of a wild card. 8th grader Makenzie Cann is super talented and has good size for a guard (5-8...and counting) but she lacks the strength to compete on a nightly basis with stronger kids right now. Anderson may be a year away at this point but with all the size and talent they are certainly a team to watch as the season progresses.

 

7. Walton-Verona- Walton returns their best player, Kelli Dixon and her side kick Sandlin. They certainly showed the region they could compete with the big boys last season, taking South Oldham all the way to the buzzer before coming up just short. Walton needs experience and IMO would benifit from playing some stronger teams. The key will be guard play. The Wildcats struggled mightly against the pressure of South Oldham and Simon Kenton last season. If they can take care of the ball and get it in to Dixon, they will be a tough out.

 

8. Carroll County- The Lady Panthers are well coached and will always bring a great effort. Coach Medford returns a big portion of his roster from last season. The Panthers have a balanced effort, led by Hannah Devine. The biggest weakness for Carroll will be its lack of size. Anderson really exposed Carroll's interior last season and Carroll must improve on the block if they want to compete for the regional title.

Anderson County doesn't have a point guard. Brown actually brought it up a few times. The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced WV could win the district. All in all, the difference between #1 and #7 is very thin.

Coach Morris does a great job at Carroll. I would be surprised if she left but she is an fine young lady.

I agree Lt. Dan. South Oldham wasn't really exposed by Anderson more like a lack of experience. You bring up another good point: who will be the point at Anderson next year. Cann is definitely a good young player but she is not a point, will one of the other young guards take over at PG?
