I'm sure the Ashland Daily would have more room to spare if Boyd County Ford wasn't allowed a TWO PAGE ad almost EVERY DAY. The Ashland Daily Independent has tunred into an advertisement for local businesses. The news has taken a "back seat" to car ads. (Pun intended) As for the "news" in the Ashland Daily who cares about what's going on in Hollywood on a daily basis. If I wanted to read the news about all the Hollywood gossip I would buy a National Enquirer. I read the Ashland Daily for the local news not the Hollywood he said she said junk.

 

And as far as MyZ goes. I live in Grayson and the cable company here does NOT carry MyZ. I do not have cable I have DirecTv due to the lack of channels and shotty programming cable offers.

I agree with you on that point Jim however I do believe they take their ads a little overboard. I just stuck an Ashland Daily from this week in the trash bag for tomorrow that had 3 Boyd County Ford ads and 2 Fannin Toyota ads that covered 4 pages of the paper. Granted advertising space sells and that's what gets a paper printed but geez man 4 pages worth of ads and 2 of the BCF ads were the same. Not sure if it was a misprint and was just my paper that got this or if it was everyone's.

 

The Daily is definitely lacking and has been for quite some time. The ads aren't my biggest concern. My concern is that if you look at an Elliott County Times which only comes out once a week they have high school kids writing the sports news and doing A LOT better job of it IMHO.

For years, I have read The Herald Dispatch, Daily Independent, Ironton Tribune, and Portsmouth Daily Times on a regular basis. All of these papers have had a huge decline in the quality of local news and sports they report. The articles by local writers are full of spelling and gramatical errors and lack any real substance. When they do report on something, it is generally full of half-truths and "facts" that haven't been verified. They rely more and more on Associated Press stories to fill their pages. I remember a few years back when one of the Rose Hill girls reached the 2,000 point milestone, the Daily Independent didn't even mention it. There are very few true journalists left in this world. I wonder where the next Ernie Salvatore will come from.

 

Well all the Independent is interested in is getting ads. Which is I'm sure what has to be done in order to keep the paper running, but really to make people pay at least $50 for an obituary is just sad. I find them to be more inclined to report on regional things than what Ashland people consider "local". That's why the wife and I no longer subscribe.

You might've just got an extra ad inserted. But still, if it weren't for those big ads, there would be even less news/sports/features content in the paper than what appears now.

I look forward to The Daily Independent each morning. It isn't what it was 20 years ago but, then, computers and the internet have caused a lot of changes in how we get our news. And, the changes are not necessarily for the overall good.

 

I believe that TDI quit printing the weekly leaders in basketball because so many local teams failed to report their statistics for inclusion. It was not unusual to see the leaders based upon the reports of 5 or 6 teams. That makes any information worthless.

 

I do agree that we could all do without "Page 2" with its People Magazine level of "celebrity" information that surely appeals only to the dullards of society.

 

Overall, I salute TDI. Times are not good for newspapers.

Enjoy your local papers while you can...they won't be around much longer.

Cause Ashland and Boyd Co. wouldnt make many of the list.

Wonder how many advertising dollars come from Elliott County and how many subscribers live in Elliott County? My guess is very few of either.

 

I realize that Eliott Countians are riding their high horse this year but they need to handle it like it has happened before rather than as finding fool's gold.

 

As Joe Torre once told a rookie who hit a homerun and "cadillaced" around the bases, "On this team we act like we have hit a homerun before".

 

Elliott County's coverage is excellent considering that the newspaper is located in Ashland and not Sandy Hook.

Just wondering why there have been no weekly stats on Fridays this season. It has been a part of the ADI sports section for years and years. I really miss em.

There are a couple of issues with stats, one being a lack of manpower (ADI has cut like everybody else). Also, all schools in the area don't report stats to the KHSAA or to the ADI for whatever reason. It would be a very incomplete list.

The Independent only has two sports writers right now with a few people that help out on occasion, so it would be really hard for those guys to get their stories done and do weekly stats.

 

Elliott County doesn't get front page stories becasue reports don't have time to get back to Ashland and write the story before the 11:30 deadline. They usually get in the 2 or 3 page because that is where the High School round-up is. The round-up goes through every game that the teams call in. You can't expect a reporter to write a story long enough for the front page from a 3 minute phone conversation.

It's a shame that the small local papers have had to cut back on staff. I guess it's a sign of the times. We may not have them much longer. I for one would much rather read the news in the paper instead of online. I read it every morning as soon as it arrives while I have my morning coffee just like a lot of other people do. Change is not always a good thing.
