Wonder how many advertising dollars come from Elliott County and how many subscribers live in Elliott County? My guess is very few of either.

 

I realize that Eliott Countians are riding their high horse this year but they need to handle it like it has happened before rather than as finding fool's gold.

 

As Joe Torre once told a rookie who hit a homerun and "cadillaced" around the bases, "On this team we act like we have hit a homerun before".

 

Elliott County's coverage is excellent considering that the newspaper is located in Ashland and not Sandy Hook.

 

People in Elliott county buy the Ashland paper and there are fewer subscribers, that is for sure. This lack of coverage has been going on for several years, not just this year, and many have dropped their subscriptions because of this. The Lexington Herald has much better coverage of Elliott County's ballgames and I've never seen any Elliott County business advertise in that paper. It's a shame that a Lexington paper 1.5 hours away is more interested in the ballteam here than the local paper. The Ashland Daily Independent is the local paper for Elliott County because it is delivered here. Ashland is not the only area that subscribes, many other surrounding counties do also. That is why the Ashland paper is still in business. Elliott County residents are very proud of our ballteam. This team not only represents this county, but the whole area and smaller schools in general, if we make it to Rupp arena.

The Independent only has two sports writers right now with a few people that help out on occasion, so it would be really hard for those guys to get their stories done and do weekly stats.

 

Elliott County doesn't get front page stories becasue reports don't have time to get back to Ashland and write the story before the 11:30 deadline. They usually get in the 2 or 3 page because that is where the High School round-up is. The round-up goes through every game that the teams call in. You can't expect a reporter to write a story long enough for the front page from a 3 minute phone conversation.

 

 

Then how does Channel 3 news out of Huntington film the game in Sandy Hook, get back to Huntington, edit and compile the clip on the game, and get it on the 11:00pm news? I would think with internet capabilities it would not be too difficult to get something in by 11:30 at night for a newspaper article.

I have read the ADI for more years than I care to remember and believe they have done a pretty good job over the years. I have been to sports events all over this area and have seen their writers at many of them. Not to long ago, I saw Rocky Stanley at Paintsville covering an event. They would have to sell a lot of papers just to pay for the gas to go to Paintsville and back. No doubt they have also been hit by the economy. I firmly believe they not only cover all the events they can, but they support all of the local teams as sports enthusiasts. I Hope they can survive this resent downturn so I can continue reading their paper.

News stations usually don't stay for the whole game. Plus reports have to interview coachs and figure stats and that takes a lot more time than you think. Then writa a story, the average story is about 400-500 words which takes anyone a while to write, plus a box score.

I know they are an enormous source of pride to the people of Elliott County and I realize that you have won two regional championships and are the favorites for a third. I also realize that you beat three comparatively weak teams at Myrtle Beach (I was there) and beat Mason County and Louisville Ballard at home. I further realize that you won your first two games ever in the Class A tournament this year (against the two weakest teams in the field) before, although you were the odds on favorite to win the tournament, losing in the semifinals. And, finally, I realize that you are 1-2 in your two trips to Rupp Arena. So, I again ask, just how much more coverage should your team get?

 

I'm not knocking your team but merely trying to add a little realism to the situation. If you win in Lexington, I'm sure you will be flooded with coverage. But, to get primetime coverage, you must win something significant. To date, that hasn't really happened and time is getting short since next year will be a "return to normalcy".

I agree with the "fact" that Elliott hasn't won a state tournament and that there were excellent teams at the BBC and it is clear those are the only "facts" you have confronted me with. A fact you are ignoring is the post BBC records of the teams beaten as well as the pre BBC record of the Pickering.

Now that is a good, honest post. The Elliott County team has been a great source of community pride for everyone in the Sandy Hook area. No one is denying that.

Just glad that the games are not decided through forums and people'e opinions.
