formerkywrestler Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I saw the title of this thread and couldn't wait to read it. You didn't disappoint at all. Excellent article!
Fastbreak Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Great read, and I agree. :thumb: "Search the Constitution as long as you like, and you will find no specific authority conveyed for the government to spend money on global-warming research, urban mass transit, food stamps, unemployment insurance, Medicaid, or countless other items in the stimulus package and, even without it, in the regular federal budget."

Is there anything in there about interstate highways or schools that sure have made our country and lifestyle better?
Jim Schue Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Isn't this the same guy the Dubya administration paid to be a shill for NCLB? Who's he working for now?

You are thinking of Armstrong Williams, another African-American writer. Walter Williams is one of my favorite economists. So you know he must be good As punishment for getting them confused, can you go back to your old avatar?
nkyfuture Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Is there anything in there about interstate highways or schools that sure have made our country and lifestyle better? State governments should be taking care of that and not federal.

cch5432 Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 Is there anything in there about interstate highways or schools that sure have made our country and lifestyle better? As Madison said (as quoted in the article), "The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite."

Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite." I think that is fair in 1776 and around then when there were 13-15 states. And things are somewhat different now when I can order this stupid new keyboard my wife bought from Hong Kong and receive it before Madison could order and get something from his own state. Also, I don't hold these guys in so much high esteem as others as they continued to let slavery go.

But are you arguing that as the country gets bigger and communication gets better, more power needs to be centralized? I think it makes more sense to micromanage. The states are very different and haven't different needs, which need to be handled differently each one. If anything, the Federal government should subsidize more to the state governments.

I had that same argument with my dad that Katrina/New Orleans should have been more La responsibility than mine. But those things that affect the entire nation should be more of the responsibility of the federal government. Interstate highways would be an example. I must admit one thing. The arguments on here and things I have read I am becoming more and more accepting of national health care. Wondering the right to health care is not much different than education. Basic health care. Doctor's visits, medicine, etc.
HHSDad Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Is there anything in there about interstate highways or schools that sure have made our country and lifestyle better? As a matter of fact, the highway system was built under the authority of two items in the constitution. Interstate commerce and national defense. Ike had experienced the nightmare of military logistics in the US and believed that an interstate highway system would cure that.
