Why haven't more banks closed and other questions about our economy?

Featured Replies

Seems like a lot of people, including myself are questioning some things about our economy and so-called recession. If you have questions or answers, please post here. Some of mine are, why haven't more banks closed? In Mason County alone there are probably 12 banks(or branches of a bank),fully staffed, no layoffs or anything. At most of them there are more employee cars than customers ever. When are the prices of candy bars and bottled soft drinks going down? No one I know ever buys a candy bar or pop anymore, don't these companies know this? When you can buy a footlong at Subway for what candy and pop almost cost, something is wrong. Why can't the President make it mandatory that credit card companies have their customers always pay at least 50% of their bill every month instead of the 10 dollar or so minimum limit that people have done for years and are continuing to do so, no one fears bankrupcy whatsoever. Wouldn't this solve some problems? Thanks for answers to these or more questions.

If the credit card companies demanded 50% payment each and every month they would go out of business and our economy would further falter: decrease in sales.

How do you figure? Many people pay off their credit card entirely. Those that couldn't meet the 50%, simply wouldn't have credit cards. How is their failure to pay 50% any different than what will be their ultimate failure to be able to pay what they owe plus interest?

The logic would be that IF I had to pay 50% of my bill every month my bill would be much smaller (ie I'm not buying as much stuff) which would mean less retail sales.

The number of cars in a bank parking lot is not an indicator of a bank's success. Smaller banks are still around because of less risky investments.

I could view that as shifting from one problem to another. It is a mistake to buy things you can't afford, and in that scenario it would shift that problem to not as many purchases being made. I still don't think that would cause credit companies to go under.

Two issues:

1. Credit card companies make the majority of their profit off of customers NOT paying their bill every month.

2. The resulting loss of "buying stuff" would hurt all businesses that allow customers to pay by credit card.

I agree. I also think we will see more banks closing this year, we are about to see an increase in foreclosures of commercial property which will just add to the problems we have today.

The government may decide not to help out banks in trouble, and just allow then to get swallowed up by those that are more stable.

The govt is not going to let many big banks close as the FDIC cannot handle it.

BUT your actually not buying anything anyway because you are putting it on a credit card that you have no intention of ever paying off, it just keeps going and going and adding and adding if you don't force people to pay it off quicker. Same way people got way in over their head by buying homes or SUV's,etc. that they could never pay for in a lifetime, hence the state of the economy. Does anyone know the answer about candy bars and pop?:irked:

Not closed, but swallowed up by more stable banks.

Tell the grocery store or department store that I really didn't buy anything.

Ask them if they're paying bills with my "fake" purchases.

Not talking big banks, the little ones spread through out the county like hair salons and gas stations. Do we need so many?

Need? Apparently there's enough need for them to stay in business. That's a good thing.

All In, Why are you wondering specifically about pop and candy prices?
