How bad is the economy really?

Featured Replies

Dining was down 1% in 08 and is projected higher than that in 09. Grocery is also down. Next thing to watch for are closures. I have already been told Ruby Tuesdays in Cold Spring is closing. WalMart is not opening any new stores, and downsizing some existing ones. You may be seeing some crowds where you go, as do I in certain places. No really reflective of what is actually going on.

Ruby Tuesdays in Cold Spring isn't closing due to the economy though. That place was doomed from the start. Poor location, and they can't compete with the likes of Longhorn, Applebees, Barleycorn's, and O'Charley's.

Working in a field where I hear alot about peoples financial situations I can certainly tell a big difference now as compared to about 2-3 years ago. At the same time though I think it still could be much worse.

While people say dining out is down a great deal, and shopping at clothing stores etc is as well, I also feel that the past decade the US had reached unprecedented levels of spending. So while we may be seeing some of the biggest drop offs ever, I feel as though it's almost a reality check. Bringing us back down off of our high horse a bit so to speak. Certainly this has made me realize the importance in saving more and planning better for my future.

Thats pretty much the abridged version on why we are in this mess in the first place.:thumb:

I agree, given your occupation as well I'm sure you've seen how frivolously people have spent their money, including borrowed money as well. When the government is doing the same, at local, state and the federal levels, well this was bound to happen eventually.

Agreed.

I've talked to people the past 3 weeks that worked for Pfizer, Novartis, J+J and Glaxo Smith Kline. Every single one of them had layoffs. I've had friends for those company's layed off.

The factories around here have been laying off. The one where my mom's dad lived just shut down knocking thousands out of their job. It is a small blue collar town and that is where the vast majority of people there have worked for generations. It is really sad around there.

I talked to a friend that owns a bar in Frankfort and he said business has gone down for sure becasuse it was cheaper for people to drink at home.

I think you see people at the grocery store and be fooled. I would say around here probably 60% of the people are on welfare living off the government. They can still go to the store. Also I know a good bit of folks around here that just abuse the heck out of the disability program. The sit on their rear, make a fat check and go out and about doing what they want.

It's a messed up world we live in. Blue collar folks out working their tails off, losing their jobs and jokers sitting on their rear collecting! Really hacks me off to no end!

It makes me want to bang my head against the desk when these people coming begging for help. I also see the other side of it where people do nothing and are given money that is wasted. :taz: I honestly believe there should be a half semester class in HS that goes over Banking, budgets, loans, interest rates etc....

I'm not sure about this specific Ruby Tuesdays, but it is a better restaurant than the one's you mentioned (tied with Barleycorn's). That salad bar is awesome!

:thumb: History and physics are important but a mandatory personal finance class would make SO much more sense.

You would be amazed at the number of people that don't even know how to write a check or fill out a deposit ticket.

I guess it's better if you like overpaying for smaller portions of food, and bad service.

If by smaller portions you mean unlimited salad, then, you are dead on. :D

Didn't Ruby Tuesday just go through some sort of overall rehab/redo a few years ago?

We actually had a full year I think it was class called Family Living. Might have been the best class I ever had. We litsted colleges/goals on our pennants that hung around the classroom. We actually went to a church and had fake weddings. You and your wife decided how many kids you were going to have (might have drawn a number), drew jobs, picked our cars, house size/payment etc. It taught us to do things like budget. You also had to take turns writing fake checks to pay bills etc. GREAT CLASS! There was a lot more too it. We did stuff like roll playing from different perspectives on teen pregnancy etc. It was an awesome class! Resumes etc too.

When I go out for dinner on the weekend it is a hour wait, some time's longer. Go to the grocery store on Sunday you can't get threw for all the people. I stop in to get a hair cut there is a wait. When I am out running around I see now hiring in the windows of store's, gas stations. This is just a few things I was thinking about this weekend.

You would never know the economy is bad in Louisville, restaurats have long waits, you can't find a parking spot in the Malls, they are building all over downtown Louisville, conventions are pouring into town and houses are selling.
