February 9, 200917 yr Not true. Hotels are struggling significantly and are cutting back payroll and services. You are absolutely correct. Conventions are down. Two major upcoming tradeshows are at about 40% of last year's numbers. Before anyone starts making assumptions about conventioneers rolling in, they may want to actually check with the CVB.

I had to leave my Galt House hotel room after the ice storm because they were 100% booked with a convention. I was lucky to find a generator.
February 9, 200917 yr I had to leave my Galt House hotel room after the ice storm because they were 100% booked with a convention. I was lucky to find a generator. You had to leave because the Kentucky School Board Association was the convention arriving. I venture to say many of those attendees were ecstatic to have the convention to attend, since they too had no power. In addition, many people made reservations for only one night when the power went out. Then, other people made reservations for the next day, since they couldn't get in on the first day. What happened was a perfect storm of people who were hoping for the best, and then getting stuck on the outside looking in, when desperate people made reservations for later and toughing it out the first night with no other options. I work in a hotel, and we were full of conventioneers, and powerless people. Our employees stayed at home in the cold themselves, because we had no rooms. You can't judge the business climate of hotels based upon weekend when a major natural disaster has occured.
February 9, 200917 yr In the Ashland area the following has occurred recently to name a few: -Goody's closed/closing -K Bee Toys closed -B Moss closed -AK Steel shut down layed off almost 100% of employees(now reopening fortunately due only to problems at Middletown plant) -Sky Line Chilli closed -Value City closed With these things happening people either spend less, spend on credit or can't save/prepare for the future. No matter how you look at it it's not good times.
February 9, 200917 yr Not sure how anyone can claim the economy is not in a dreadful state. There was a loss of almost 600,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate rose to 7.6 percent, its highest level in more than 16 years. It was the biggest monthly job loss since the economy officially fell into a recession and almost half of the 3.6 million jobs lost since December 2007 have occurred in the past 3 months, indicating that things are still worsening rapidly.

Agree with you 100% Sometime people just can't look at certain areas and say that the economy isn't bad. People have to buy groceries, they also may be buying less or off brand items. As has been said, most people who once went out several times a week are only going out on the weekends, and spending less when they do go out. Back in late summer people were saying that they thought the same amount of cars were on the road so therefor people were not driving less, but soon after we did find out that people were indeed driving less.
