Les
Enjoy. :thumb: Boys Top 5 1. Corbin (18-2 overall, 11-1 against 13th Region foes) What’s the scoop: Not much to say since last week, so with that said, I’ll give an update on just how good things are going for Corbin right now. Since dropping a 66-53 decision to Scott on Dec. 20, 2008, the Corbin Redhounds have reeled off 15 straight wins, while beating teams by margins of 16, 15, 6, 68, 25, 18, 3, 25, 22, 12, 66, 12, 29, 28 and 22 points for a margin of victory average of 24.4 points. Now that’s pretty impressive. Corbin is now ranked No. 6 in the Cantrell Rating the State ratings and No. 7 in the Associated Press Poll. Surprise, surprise: The Redhounds received a 14-point effort from Aaron Manns last week during their 79-57 win over Whitley County. There isn’t a team in the 13th Region that compares to the firepower Corbin has on offense. With the likes of Josh Crawford, Lee Crawford, Josh Smith, Madison Johnson, Isaac Wilson, Blake Hendrickson, Travis Smith and Manns manning the floor for most of the game, it’s going to be hard to defeat the Redhounds this season. What’s ahead: Corbin will be back in action today on the road against South Laurel with game time scheduled for 6:30 p.m. If the Redhounds win for the third time this season against the Cardinals, they’ll wrap up the No. 1 seed. Corbin will play Friday at home against North Laurel before hosting Williamsburg on Tuesday. 2. Clay County (11-8, 3-2) What’s the scoop: The Tigers move up a spot and could turn out to be the most dangerous team in the 13th Region. The Tigers have some deadly outside shooters, but the key to success for Clay County could be rebounding. Surprise, surprise: Kevin Spurlock’s squad saw their four-game win streak come to an end this past week after dropping a 62-48 decision to Bryan Station. The 14-point loss to the Defenders turned out to be the Tigers’ second loss this season to the Lexington school. What’s ahead: Clay County will get a test on the road today against former coach Mike Jones and his Harlan County Black Bears. The Tigers will host Raceland Saturday. 3. South Laurel (14-6, 6-2) What’s the scoop: The Cardinals drop a spot after dropping three of their last five games, which includes back-to-back losses to both Lexington Catholic and Warren Central. Granted, South Laurel has played the region’s most rugged schedule, but Steve Wright’s squad needs to show more consistency. Surprise, surprise: A Cardinal loss today against Corbin will extend their losing streak to three games. The last time South Laurel dropped three games in a row was during the 2006-07 season at the end of December. What’s ahead: The Cardinals will host Corbin today before another home game against Williamsburg Saturday. Then a road game against Breathitt County Tuesday will begin a six-game road trip for South Laurel. Ouch! 4. Knox Central (11-7, 9-3) What’s the scoop: The Panthers are another team that is very dangerous team. Knox Central remains the only 13th Region team to have beaten Corbin ¬— take away their two losses against South Laurel and the Panthers are 9-1 against regional opponents. Surprise, surprise: Knox Central is heating up at the right time. The Panthers have captured seven wins during their last eight games. Players such as Seth Bingham, Josh Brown and Travis Canady are really improving and that’s key for Brandon Elam’s squad. What’s ahead: Knox Central will host Wayne County Friday before traveling to face-off against Whitley County on Feb. 3. 5. Pineville (14-8, 10-4) What’s the scoop: Head coach J.D. Strange has done a fantastic job with the Mountain Lions this season despite having a lot of key players graduate from last season’s squad. Surprise, surprise: James Strange turned in a 42-point effort against Lynn Camp during the semi-finals of the All A Classic 13th Region Tournament and is showing why he is one of the best players around. Pineville surprised a lot of people by winning the All A Classic 13th Region Tournament. What’s ahead: The Mountain Lions will square-off against Calvary Christian during first round action of the All A Classic State Tournament today and if they keep winning, they’ll be back in action the remainder of the week. Strange’s squad will get another test on Tuesday against Clay County. The Best of the rest No. 6 North Laurel (9-12, 3-4) What’s the scoop: It looks as if things are beginning to turn around for North Laurel. Wins over Marshall County and Henry Clay this past week were huge. No. 7 Middlesboro (16-3, 9-2) What’s the scoop: The Yellow Jackets suffered a setback with their 58-57 loss to Pineville last week. No. 8 Whitley County (10-11, 7-5) What’s the scoop: The Colonels picked up a big win on Tuesday against Bell County. The Colonels were trailing 48-34 going into the fourth quarter before rallying to win, 58-57. No. 9 Harlan County (10-9, 4-6) What’s the scoop: The Black Bears haven’t fared well against 13th Region competition. No. 10 Bell County (7-10, 3-7) What’s the scoop: The Bobcats have talent, but still can’t seem to get over the hump — just yet.
Leonidas
Pineville is too high. Had a good win against M'boro but what else to deserve #5? They have a nice record but look at the teams. Have decent wins in Woodford and split with Harlan Co. The rest of the wins are not impressive. I agree with everything else.
Les
Who else deserves No. 5? Bell? No way. Middlesboro, ummmm, no. North Laurel? Not yet. Whitley? They're struggling without Lebanion, but still managed to come back from 14 points from Bell and still win. Harlan County? Nope. To be honest, a number of teams could be considered for the five spot. HDE
Middlesboro is the only other to put there, but they just lost to Pineville, so it's hard to argue at this point.
Bayshore Drive
Still sticking with my prediction on no wins for the 52nd in the regional.
Cawoodball player
Still sticking with my prediction on no wins for the 52nd in the regional. Seriously, are you trying to start an argument?
Bayshore Drive
No, why is it that if I state my opinion that it is fodder to start an argument. My position is that the 49th winner and maybe the runner up is better than anyone in the 52nd, for sure the 50th is better than either, and the 51st winner and maybe the runner up are better. I look at who is playing the best ball now, for me it is South, Corbin, Clay, Knox,Pineville, the next three could be in any order North, HC, Mboro. I look for Bell Co to keep getting better, Mboro to fall back, and HC to keep playing about the same. All year long Les's ratings have kept HC at the bottom two in the top 10, guess what only eight teams make it to the regional. More of my reasoning was about Mboro they seem to always fall short of what is expected of them, I don't see a change this year.
Leonidas
Still sticking with my prediction on no wins for the 52nd in the regional. Will not happen unless they draw SL and Corbin/Clay. The 52nd is as good as the rest. Les."Who else deserves No. 5? Bell? No way." I agree No way either but they should be ahead of P'ville. But I guess I see your point of Who then? :idunno:
gchs_uk9
Still sticking with my prediction on no wins for the 52nd in the regional. Seriously, are you trying to start an argument? Doesn't seem like you're stepping out on a very big limb. I guess Bell, Harlan County, and/or Middlesboro could get a regional tournament win with the right draw, but they all seem way too up-and-down. Maybe ranks with the 49th District, but 49th has better top two teams, IMO. Combined Harlan County (1-4), Middlesboro (3-2), Harlan (5-4, BUT two wins against Red Bird and two wins against Jackson) and Bell County (2-5) are a combined 11-15 against the other districts - which includes Harlans two wins apiece against Red Bird and Jackson County. So no, the 52nd District isn't just as good as the others.
Bayshore Drive
I am glad that someone else pointed out that the other districts are stronger this year, and I am not trying to degrade the locals.

The 49th may also have the three worst teams in the region. Harlan is our fourth seed, and they are 5-0 against Jackson County, OBI and Red Bird and it could be 6-0 after Tuesday. North has been up and down, much like Bell County and Harlan County. I will stand up for the honor of the 52nd and pick at least one regional tournament victory. Bayshore and I will work out the arrangements later on the prize that goes to the victor in this debate.
Bluegirl
Because the way HC plays defense and tends to slow the game down and work the ball inside/out I believe they have the works to show a run late in the season.
