FCsnapper85
Alot of Fleming Co. fans would like to be back in the 10th as well. Not sure about the details but Simons Middle School (Fleming) will be participating in a middle school district tourney held at Bath Co. in a couple of weeks. This is the first time that I can recall that we have participated in a middle school district tourney. I was also told (but not sure) that the winner may move on to a regional as well. FCsnapper85
Simons 7th grade defeated Harrison co. 7th last week but the Harrsion Co. 8th grade appeared to have a very nice team (did not watch all of the game). Very long and athletic. I am quite sure the traveling and AAU schedule has improved their game. They looked improved over the last time I saw them at the KBA. All In
I know other regions throughout the state have middle school regional tournaments but the 10th does not. This could change with the new state tournament that is suppose to take place next year I believe. What new state tournament?
HOOPDR
What new state tournament? I believe it is the KHSCA that is behind this in Basketball & Football. Kentucky High School Coaches Association.
Rainman11
I believe it is the KHSCA that is behind this in Basketball & Football. Kentucky High School Coaches Association. From what I have heard, the plan is to play the middle school state in Frankfort in December. Same format as the state tournament -- one team from every region. That would knock out the Lexington schools since they don't begin until January, so the 11th Region middle school tournament would be diluted. This would be competition for the middle school state currently played at the KBA. The one thing I have not heard is whether it's 6th, 7th and 8th, or only one of the age groups. ladiesbballcoach
There does NOT need to be a MS state tournament. Let them play for the love of the game and to develop instead of building up parents ego saying their child won the MS state tournament. This should be one of SI's sign of the apocolypse. Qryche11
From what I heard, the 8th grade team is also essentially the freshman team at Harrison, meaning most of the kids play up and play a lot for the freshman. I know you have some people that don't think you get any benefit from AAU/weekend tournaments, I think this 8th grade group is proving otherwise. 3-4 years ago, Harrison starting playing a lot of weekend tournaments and getting a lot of games in outside of the middle school schedule, playing through March. Before they started this, they were very average. Now, while they are not by any means world beaters, they compete and their kids know the game much more than they once did. I agree, they were a tough out in the Desert Classic Campbell Co tourney a couple years ago. I thought they also played pretty well in the Georgetown tourney last year also. Good to see they are striving to get better.

ladiesbballcoach
If that is the case, then why do gyms have scoreboards? I have no problem with having a winner for games. But to have a state title for 13 year olds in schools? 12 year olds? 11 year olds? Ridiculous. Schools can use their funds and time for much better endeavors than a district, regional and state tournament? Some parent must need their ego fed really much to put this together. sacbunt
The 8th grade gruop is definitely the worst group that has come through the system in quite a while. I would be surprised in any of those kids ever contribute in high school. The Chambers kid has the most physical ability, but in the times I have seen him play doesn't appear to have the drive at this point to make a difference. I hope he finds it in the near future. The 8th grade group has battled all year long and has done well under new Coach Scott Anderson. They are 9-7 this year. Marcel Jackson, Austin Tuel, and Tyler Baxter could have promising futures for the Royals. Jackson has averaged about 12 a game and Tuel is very quick off the dribble. They will be a very nice piece to the puzzle for the Royals when the soph. group is seniors. You also have Dalton Mason and Shawn Johnson on the 7th grade and Dorian Henry and Darious Johnson on the 6th grade. The future is very bright for the defending state champions. Mason County at the middle school level isn't about wins and losses, it is about developing talent into productive high school basketball players. FCsnapper85
I don't really want to debate talent at the middle school level because so many things can change. However I kind of agree with Rainman on Masons 8th graders. Things could change by high school but I just don't see a whole lot with Mason Co's 8th grade group. The 7th however has several nice players. Even if the two mentioned decide to go back to Lewis Co. there are several others that could have a nice future in the Mason program.
