I will ask this again. What percentage of the population is obese due to a medical condition such as an unactive thyroid (or something else). The only number I could find said between 2% - 20%. Also of that number what percentage cannot be control with medication?

OhYea, you said your family has thyroid problems. Is this a condition that can't be treated with medicine? I have tried to find some info but haven't found the answers I was looking for.

They do take medicine to even the levels out, the problem is thryoid problems make it VERY difficult to lose weight. And when you do lose it, it typically comes back. My parents are very serious about getting their health in order. They had weight loss surgery [lap band] last year and my mom has lost 100+ and my dad has lost 70. Again, I'm VERY proud of my parents, and the only thing I really take offense to is people saying they are disgusted by them or that they brought this on themselves and are lazy etc. Because you don't actually know that is the issue. For a lot I'm sure it is. For an 800 lb child its likely their sedentary nature and diet. But not all people are fat out of their own lack of discipline.

For me, I know that their is a huge history of heart disease, diabetes, and weight gain in my family. But honestly, If I get fat right now at this point, it's all on me, because I am lazy as can be today. I'm trying to work on it, but that is a fact. My parents are not in that same category.

How far do we take this "its their own fault" argument? Do we deny them healthcare?

Do you want to forbid amputees who lost their leg because they were drunk or do you only want to if they have a "condition?"

All of your posts seem to indicate that a person should have to answer "why" they are handicapped and then have judgment passed. However, your arguments are either lacking or inconsistent.

I'd thoroughly enjoy a good healthy debate rather than silly icons being posted. Its up to you. It could be good for the thread.

Sorry Clyde, but your arguments just aren't standing up with us. You're trying desperately to tie fat people to people with real disabilities. You can keep trying if you like, but it just isn't going to happen. As for what I post, I post what I believe an argument deserves. Unfortunately, your argument in this situation deserved this icon.

As we've pointed out over and over, a person doesn't have to indicate WHY they are disabled (the proper term), they simply need to indicate that they are, in fact, disabled. People who can't stop shoving food in their mouths while they sit in front of the TV and colllect a government check are NOT disabled.

So, on behalf of us all...

As a nurse do you see drunks come in with debilitating injuries? Do you want to forbid them from a handicap parking pass due to their weakness for liquor?
Only if they're fat.

That's awesome! Unlike the people that are being defended in here, they obviously had a serious condition to fight against. But they were determined to overcome their problems and they did it. That's great! :thumb:

Thank you. It's nice to see it for myself, because really my whole life I saw them struggle with it. :)

I know what they're going through. I seriously considered the lap-band last summer. I even talked to the doctor and reserved a place at a meeting. But I decided to try it without the surgery. I figured I don't need to complicate my medical situation an more than it already is. What I'm doing now seems to be working for me (at the moment); but I would wholeheartedly support their decision to go the surgical route.

Yeah, I was worried at first, but it's honestly been the best thing to happen for them. My mom is so much happier and confident and healthier overall. Same for my dad. I think it's great youre trying to do it the natural way though, and I hope you succeed so you don't have to go the surgical route.

Did they have much in the way of complications or problems with eating afterwards?

You know, I may end up going that route at some point. So I may be back in touch with you for moral support. ;-)

It takes a little time to adjust to what you can and can not eat, but after you get the hang of it, it's not bad they said. You do have problems with some things getting stuck, in which you end up throwing it back up. I'm sure that part isn't great lol. But so far they are so much happier. It automatically programs you to eat less by portioning what you can eat basically. And the great thing is you dont gain it back. If you go this route, let me know, I can talk to you more about it. :)

I guess you chose the "or not" option.

You have a wild hair towards obese people (and you're the ONLY one who thinks "fat" and "obese" are the same thing) and its odd.

Even if we discount the wild hair you also have failed miserably in answering the real question . If a person is unable to walk why do we get to choose which causes are worthy of a parking pass and which ones are not?

The comparison to a drunk driver is 100% valid because it gets to the root of your argument - they brought it upon themselves.

So as I asked in another post: should the "reason" a person is disabled or incapacitated determine whether they receive health care?

So, again, feel free to continue with your denials and silly icons or choose to show me where my logic is incorrect.

Thanks. I'll let you know after I get weighed tomorrow. :D

Define disabled.

Sorry Clyde, this just isn't working for ya.

The facts have been presented. Deal with them as you like.

Define disabled.
