Shelby County 51 Spencer County 50

Featured Replies

Final.

This was a very exciting game. Shelby led by 6 at the half, and Spencer led going into the 4th. Spencer kept a 4 point cushion for the majority of the 4th and extended the lead to 5 with just under a minute to play. Shelby cut the lead to three with 30 seconds to go, and after Spencer made a free throw Shelby came down and hit a three, cutting the lead to just 1 with about 20 seconds on the clock. Marshall (I think) misses two free throws and Shelby has the ball down one, just under 20 seconds to go. They get a quick two off, miss, and Spencer gets the rebound and outlets the ball. The Spencer County player then just lost control of the ball and it rolled out of bounds with under 10 seconds to play. Shelby again gets off a shot and misses and Spencer grabs the rebound, however the Spencer girl steps out of bounds. The clock showed 0:00, however the officials put 2 seconds back on the clock and Shelby inbounded the ball under their own basket. The inbounds play was a lob for Lecompte, who caught the pass and made about an 8 footer (unchallenged really) as the clock ran out and Shelby wins by 1, 51-50.

The Spencer County team was obviously stunned and upset, as I dont think they have ever beaten Shelby (at least that's what I was told). To have a game slip away like that is certainly disheartning. Spencer should however have confidence if these two teams do indeed matchup in the first round of the district tournament. With better execution they take this game. Up 5 under a minute to go and they commit two crucial turnovers and go 1/4 from the free throw line. Tough loss, but I'm sure they learned something for a more meaningful game to be played in a few months.......

The 30th district tourny just got a little more interesting

The 30th district tourny just got a little more interesting

Really!

I saw Sally Zimmerman's brother tonight at the YMCA (he and I both coach YMCA basketball teams) and he was asking me about Spencer. Told him it could be very interesting... Looks like AC is still the solid district favorite, but the second spot is very very interesting... Looks like Shelby and Spencer will have to play in the first round, too!

Spencer has an experienced club and has a size advantage with Marshall in the middle. Not a big shock to me playing the Rockets that close. Congrats to Shelby.

Spencer is tough at home! Where is this district tournament being played?

Congrats to Shelby.

District is at Anderson.

IF Anderson can beat Shelby.

Well, they haven't played yet, so AC hasn't proven anything...but I know who AC has and I've seen Shelby...and right now, AC looks like the better team.

Especially when you note that Anderson thrashed Spencer by 15...

Then again, it's only January 6th. And when two rivals collide, everything goes out the window.

It is certainly shaping up to be a huge game. No one wants to play Spencer in the first round.

Marshall is a nice post player, but Spencer goes through long stretches where they seem to not be looking to get her the ball. In the two games I have seen them play, they have come out really looking to get Marshall involved early only to lose focus and have her go through long stretches without getting any touches. Shelby simply had no answer for her last night. Whenever she was able to get the ball on the block it was either a layup or two free throws. Im sure Spencer is hoping that Anderson can beat Shelby, because Spencer matches up much better against Shelby. Anderson can contain Marshall, whereas I'm just not sure Shelby has anybody who can check her.

Very well said and I agree with all points- tough loss for Spencer Co. - so close but yet so far!

Also, don't discount the adjustments that Zimmerman will make. She is one of the finest coaches in the state.

Amen! And a classy person to boot. Shelby will truly miss her as a coach - but I'm certain she's going to be a tremendous AD.

One of my favorite people in the 8th.
