By-laws question

Featured Replies

I was having a conversation with a man and he was talking about a coach who gave a player a ride home after a practice and he said that was against the KHSAA rules and that the coach could get in trouble for that. The thing is is that the coach and the parents of the child are good friends and they socialize on a regular basis and their children (who play on the team together) are also good friends. He was saying that the coach was not allowed to do favors for players, it was a violation.

I know for a fact that a parent of the player could not get off work to pick the child up and asked the coach to drop the child off. It was really just a friend helping out a friend.

I know that a coach could not do this for a player that attends another school and is a potential "recruit" (for lack of a better word) but I have never seen anything in the by-laws about a coach not being able to do a favor for a current player. It just seems rediculous since the parents are good friends.

Is this man correct and if there is a rule in the by-laws, where would I find it.

I have read the By-Laws and unless I missed it somewhere, I have never seen anything that would make this a violation.

No way this is a rule.

I know of more than one school where the coach is actually the bus driver and physically drops off each kid after a game (although rarely basketball). I'd think this could be constrewed the same way.

No such rule that I am aware of, and I have read the By-Laws several times. I think this man may have just been implying something that was not there.

I don't think it is a KHSAA by-law but most school systems discourage coaches driving players around because of liability issues for the school. If the coach was to wreck or be accused of something it could create a problem for the coach and the school.

NOT a violation.

I think if this was a bylaw alot of coach's would be in trouble. I re-call one winter we had a little bit of snow and for some of us players including myself who lived out in the country we couldnt get town because the roads werent cleared here and some of us didnt have our lincese's yet so our coach who had 4x4 came to get us and also returned us home after practice. I believe this happened right before a holiday tournament so not practicing wasnt a option

The only instance, I could see this applying would be transportation to and from, during the "Dead Period".
