First I disagree with their point but if it is so, how would that make it ANY different than any of the other music in any other genre?

 

In any particular genre of music there are going to be artists who do not challenge themselves and essentially make the same stuff over and over again. AC/DC, for example. The problem with the Christian rock genre is it's ALL that way. For good or ill, because of the subject matter, those who make music in that genre have already painted themselves in a corner lyrically, whether they wanted to or not. And as far as composition goes (music, not lyrics), there's not much new ground left to pave that hasn't already been done in blues, country, folk or rock.

For the record, with reference to my earlier comment: My criticism has nothing to do with the message. I've always loved Bluegrass and black gospel. My beef lies with the delivery. South Park nailed it on the head with that one.

When I listen to the so called geniuses of Rap I feel dirty, angry and depressed.

 

When I listen to standard Top 40 fare, I remember why as a teenager I wanted to grow up.

 

When I listen to Country I get the idea that everybody is cheating on everybody and a good dog is hard to find.

 

A lot of contemporary music leaves me feeling empty and cheated out of the time I spent listening to it.

 

The difference for me is the content of the lyrics. I happen to agree with the Christian message, so the words of most CC songs do not offend me. I will grant you that not every tune is effective, but there's enough that do speak to me I find it more worthwhile than most other genres.

To me, the music itself is bad, the lyrics are repetitive, and couldn't the message be spread in a much more effective way? I am friends with tons of Christians and I don't know anyone personally (outside of BGP) that listens to CC. It seems like a waste of time and a disservice to the ears.

 

And it's not the Christian message for me...I actually own some cd's by the Blind Boys of Alabama and absolutely love them, I own some Johnny Cash gospel cd's and like them a lot as well. I just call a spade a spade when I see it...and CC is awful.

I listen to some form of Christian Music at least three times a week on average. I'm not dismissing it because of the message at all. I'm dismissing the quality and the relevance of contemporary christian music.

The message is not the problem. It's the delivery mechanism that turns me off.

DC Talk and Toby Mac would not be creating the same Christian music over and over again.

 

It seems your last sentence than would say that ALL music is lacking creativity. Or is it easy to be creative in blues but not in Christian music because it was done in blues?

For me, it would not be a waste of time.

I like Christian music, but don't necessarily like Christian radio. WAY-FM is a big station, but they tend to play the same stuff over and over. I deployed to Afghanistan in March of 2008 and when I went home in October of 2008 the same songs were on the radio, just a few new ones that I hadn't heard of.

 

I love harder stuff, stuff like Pillar, Project 86, Red, August Burns Red. I like some Christian Hip-Hop like John Reuben (he's more original than most secular hip-hoppers). I'm also big on a band named Seventh Day Slumber, they've got some good stuff out there as well. Toby Mac is really good as well.

 

My favorite band it Thrice, not a Christian band, but a band made up of three (out of four) Christians.......and the singer, Dustin Kensrue is simply amazing (check him out if you get the chance).
