Worst Pain EVER!

Featured Replies

I just surpassed 100 oz of water since 2:30.

Thanks Coop and BF. I guess if no one on BGP has a solution then there isn't one. I'm trying to "man up" but good lord...

How about some beer?

Nothing you can do to prevent them - just minimize your chances. Lots of water and watch calcium intake. Suposedly there are 2 kinds of stones - stones from calcuim and stones from uric acid. I've had 7 myself and currently have 3 more in the kidneys "dormant" - let's all pray they stay there. I've been hospitalized, passed some at home, had a stent put in and had the lithotripsy. Not fun experiences, and if not for Toradol and Diluadid, I think I would have died. Piece of advice.....Don't bother with the morphine - go straight for the Dilaudid. Glad you're feeling better Sticky.

Jeez... All these horror stories of kidney stones has me worried. What can you do to prevent them?

As CJ said, good luck. :thumb:

I have had broken ribs, ankles, thumb.

I have had my gall bladder removed (Neanderthal era when they cut me from stem to stern it seemed.)

I have had my knee sliced from surgery (Cro-Magnon era when they only stuck a scope in to look around and then sliced you up anyway).

I have had all four impacted wisdom teeth removed at the age of 40!

I have had various stitches and shots and many other things known to man that causes pain.

But I have never, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER had ANY PAIN that was close to my kidney stones. :scared:

I remember a nurse asking me once about some chest pains I was enduring:

"On a scale of 1 to 10 what would you say these are?"

"In relation to what, my greatest pain ever?"

"Yes, sir."

"Ma'am, you can filet may alive right now with knife and it would be a 4 tops. I've given birth to kidney stones!"

The nurse said, "Oh, disregarding that experience, now rate it." :sssh:

I've had 5 of these. I feel your pain and just now saw the thread.

I went about 10 years between #4 and #5. #5 was this past August. I took Vicodin, Coedine and some Phengren within the first 2 hours. But by hour 4 I was in a position I didn't think was humanly possible, snaked around the toilet. (On a gross note, it's amazing what we don't clean up under the back of that porcelin world.)

I finally went to the ER when the Doctor said they had better drugs than anyone. My wife drove me there with me sitting on my knees in the passenger seat floorboard and my face buried in the seat, backwards.

Luckily the ER was low in #, I muttered kidney stone and they put me through right away. One of my church members was my nurse and she told me, "We'll take care of you. I've got the good stuff. The first two shots will help but the third shot will burn and we will put the rails on the bed up after that is over so you don't fly away."

She was right. That third shot I immediately felt my soul leave my body. I even remember saying something to my wife like: "I know there really aren't bugs on that wall but I'd swear to you there are."

Right after that the nurse told my wife, we need a urine specimen. My wife said, "Don't you think we should have gotten that before you hit him with the 3rd shot?" So I slumped against the bed with my wife holding a jug for what must have been 15 minutes. At one point I thought I had actually urinated and my wife said, 'They will need more than a drop hunny. I mean it.'"

Good news was they pain meds helped me get BACK ON TOP of the pain and manage it. That's the biggest key. I passed it 2 days later.

When I got back to the church office later that week, a church member who thinks he's a humorist had left me a present on my desk. He took a softball and wrapped barbed wire through it and around it. He wrote on the ball: "Hatz' worst nightmare. Passed on August 15, 2008."

It sits proudly in my office to this day.

God bless you Sticky Mitts and welcome to the club.

As Henry mentioned, I recently joined the "club" too. Was out to dinner with Henry, a client and the client's wife at Palomino's. Things started feeling bad. Not having had a stone before, I initially had no clue what was wrong. We ended dinner early. I tried to drive home but on the ramp to 471, I had to stop and get sick on the side of the road (yeah, I was the guy in the suit emptying my stomach). Made it home, took some Tylenol and went to sleep. At about 12:30 Thursday morning a shot of pain awakened me and it was off to the hospital. After spending what seemed like an hour in the ER waiting room (it was probably less than 5 minutes) it was into the ER and some much anticipated morphine. That's good stuff. Went home around 3:30 a.m. and stuck to a steady diet of Percocet and water. I think I drained two swimming pools. Had to drive to Louisville Friday morning for the state games and some business. Laid off the Percocet until I made it to PJS. Not sure the truck had actually turned off before some Percocet were going down the throat. Made for a pretty laid back spectator on Friday.

The first stone I ever had was in October of '91 and I had just moved 5 months earlier from KY to VA. I was in a grocery store and had no idea. I even crouched to look at items on the bottom shelf so I could gather myself together. Didn't work.

Drove as fast as I could across the small town of Orange to the Doctor's. (ran 2 red lights because no one else was coming) A soon as I said, "I hurt here and am afraid I'm dying," they took me back and started the drugs. Since then, I've known exactly what was going on.

My best regimen with the '97 kidney stone (named it Big Earl ) was take every drug that had a sleeping agent I had, get in the shower for 20 minutes as hot as I could stand it on my kidney. Lay on a heating pad for 30 and then repeat as needed. For 2 days this went on and if I'd had a gun I'd have shot myself.

On the third day the Doctor hit me with more morphine and phenegren and still I cried. They put me in the hospital and later that day, as they began to schedule the laser thing, it moved. Then all those drugs said, "Remember us? It's time for sleep." I slept for almost a whole 24 hours. I think.

I'm glad I wasn't where you were heading LN. Then again I've never tried a sporting event on Percoset. Did you see the colors?

As I was telling my wife about this thread, we started reminiscing about some of the craziness that we've gone through with all my stones over the past 15 years. I had forgotten about one incident that made us laugh (now, not back then ;)).

Normally, when you go to the ER with kidney stone pain, they get you back fairly quickly so that they can hook you up to the IV and administer the pain meds. One particular occasion, I got sent back fairly quickly as usual, but had this nurse who took her sweet time getting back to me after her initial visit and was not particularly friendly nor sympathic to my misery. I was rotating between going to the bathroom (not really doing anything, just kept feeling like it) and laying curled up on the floor. The nurse finally came back and wanted to get my vitals. I played along for a few minutes, but started getting a little irritated and my wife noticed. She said, "I think he really needs to get some pain medicine." The nurse replied, "Well, first I need to get a urine specimen so we can test for blood in his urine." I said, "You've got to be kidding me! What? You think I'm acting here so I can get some meds? You're out of your mind." Well, she didn't relent and handed me the little specimen jar. I was so mad and could have strangled her. I went to the restroom and, with all my might, managed to get out a decent amount of urine - which was bright red. I don't mean somewhat red - it was about as red as if I had slit my wrists and bled into the cup. It actually kind of freaked me out for a second, but I knew what was going on. I was just about doubled over in pain, but managed to get back to my little room, whereupon I handed the cup to the nurse, and said, "Here's your (insert the grand tamale of all curse words) specimen. You happy now? Now go get my (repeat of the same word) pain medicine Nurse Ratchet." My wife's eyes got about as large as saucers, as I cuss very infrequently and certainly don't use that word very often and never twice in one sentence. She immediately tried to apologize for me, at which point I told her stop and then added, "By the way, if you're not going to get me my pain medicine, could you at least go find a real nurse?" She (nurse) left without saying a word, returned with another nurse about a minute later, hooked up the IV and gave me my shot and all was right with the world. Except for my wife, who I think wanted to re-use the needle to stab me in the throat. Which she would have been welcome to do at that point because I couldn't have felt it. :D

Hatz and Coop, those are some "great" stories. I'm having a hard time typing because I'm still chuckling.

Sticky, don't have it tested. What fun is knowing how to prevent something that brings great joy to others?

Heck, put it in a Tiffany's box and present the Mrs. with a stone for Christmas she'll never forget.

Merry Christmas to all the members of the Stone Club (and to Big Earl too:D).
