Becca Greenwell 8th grade scholarship offer

Featured Replies

Owensboro Catholic 8th grader already been offered University of North Carolina ride. Barring injuries she will be able to have her pick of schools. If you ever get a chance to see her, take it in. Maybe Miss Basketball as a Junior and Senior if not before.

WOW! 8th grader! Thanks for the info goradio, this kid must be something special.

Congrats to her!:ylsuper:

I have to admit when I saw the thread title (offer to 8th grader) I thought that Gillispie had offered.

Congrats to her but one thing in your comments will not happen. She will not win Miss Basketball as a junior. In kentucky, only seniors are eligible to win that distinction.

Congrats to this young lady! What's her height and position?

Thanks for the correction. I did not know that. :thumb:

She is listed at 6'. She plays forward, but she brings the ball up the floor. I am sure she will be a guard in college as she handels the ball so well and passes way to good for her age. She has very long arms. Her sister has committed to Bellarmine (her sister is a senior) and Becca will just play where she chooses. She went to San Diego this summer at some elite phenom camp and toured UNC in the summer with a AAU team in a tournment where she was offered the ride.

Is that even "legal"? Per NCAA rules, off-campus contact with or phone calls to a recruitable athlete cannot be made before July 1 of their junior year. I guess "incidental" contact on the campus of a school during, say an AAU tournament, may not violate that rule but I suspect a scholarship offer during that contact would.

The NCAA rules are rather complex and convoluted, but I don't think it is legal to make an official scholarship offer to an eighth grader.

When a player is on their campus they are free to say anything, even offer...unless it's during the dead period. They also can't pay for anything until their senior year (official visit).

What kind of numbers is she putting up? What AAU team is she on?

She played this summer for Tenn. Elite ( 7th in nation this past summer ). She is average approx 23ppg this year (early ) in fact she is real close i think to average of a triple double. It is early in season, but i say a good chance by her junior/senior year she will average that the whole season. The Vols. were there to watch her this week and she did not dissappoint. They moved her to senior division in AAU this summer and played against the top seniors in the land and did real good against them

I was under the assumption that recruiting rules didn't start until a player's freshman year.

That's impressive. Congrats to her

I am not sure how any of that works. I have to assume it is all legit if they post it in the paper on the recent article they had. Maybe someone can clarify the rules.

There are many NCAA Recruiting regulations, governing off/on Campus visits and other aspects. Below is a link, which may help some.

If she was on campus, it was an "unofficial visit" due to her current grade status and communication, could take place.

Hope this young lady, continues to excel in Basketball and gets an opportunity, to continue her education in College.

There is a ton of ambiguity in the NCAA rules and they are certainly open to a lot of interpretation. I'm not sure a trip to a campus for an AAU tourney would qualify as an unofficial visit. Certainly one NCAA coach I know wouldn't see it that way. But again, that's where interpretation comes in.

By the way, Greenwell is certainly off to a flying start, as has been mentioned in this thread. Through 3 games she is averaging 26 PPG, 8.7 PPG, 3.7 APG, and 4.0 steals per game. She is shooting 59% from the floor, 47% from 3, and 83% from the line. That's a great stat line for anyone, much less an 8th grader! Those stats are from of maxprep.com.
