King of the Bluegrass NKY or Louisville

Featured Replies

Louisville is primarily 6A ball. Most of the football-playing schools in the city are 6A and I feel very comfortable in asserting that Louisville 6A is vastly better than NKY 6A. Without Trinity and X, I still feel that Louisville 6A is vastly better. For two off the top of my head, this season Manual and Eastern are both better than anyone in NKY 6A.

Louisville does not however, have the long-standing tradition of independent schools or smaller schools with football success. Louisville has noone (outside of last year's Central team) to compare with schools like Highlands, Beechwood, NCC, etc. We exist on two very different planes; in Louisville, most everyone attends a big school, in Northern Kentucky, that simply isn't the case. It's tough to compare the two.

This thread reminds me of the old SNL "Swerski's Superfan" skits, an excerpt of which is provided below:

Bill Swerski: Now, gentlemen, let me ask you this: What if Da Bears were all 14 inches tall, you know, about so high? Now, what's your score of today's game?

Carl Wollarski: Against Da Giants?

Bill Swerski: Yes, give 'em a handicap.

Carl Wollarski: Bears 18, Giants 10. And that would finally be a good game.

Pat Arnold: Yeah, it would be a good game. Mini Bears 24, Giants 14.

Todd O'Conner: What about Ditka? Would he be mini, too?

Bill Swerski: No, he would be full-grown.

Todd O'Conner: Oh, then, uh.. Mini Bears 31, Giants 7.

Carl Wollarski: Oh, hold on. Then I change mine, too. I thought it was Mini Ditka.

Bill Swerski: Okay, gentlemen, another scenario: Da Bears, they don't make it, the plane is delayed.. and the only one who shows up is Ditka. Ditka vs. Da Giants. Okay, score, gentlemen.

Pat Arnold: Alright, after da heart attack, I gotta say Ditka 17, Giants 14. He just barely gets by.

Bill Swerski: Alright, that sounds exciting. Perhaps, you know, a late Ditka field goal.

Todd O'Conner: Bears!

Superfans: Bears!!

Bill Swerski: Hey! As you fans know, sports celebrities like to frequent Ditka's. And oddsmaker Danny Sheridan has just sat down with us. Now, Danny.. what would the point spread be for a game like that? Ditka vs. Da Giants. Now, remember, it's only Ditka, not the regular Bears team.

Danny Sheridan: Okay. I'm gonna say the Giants by about 800.

Bill Swerski: Great, Danny. Now, are you from New York?

Carl Wollarski: He lives in New York, eh, Pat?

Bill Swerski: You like it there. You can stay there, as far as I'm concerned.

Danny Sheridan: No, it's just that.. it's one guy, you know-

Bill Swerski: Yeah, that's alright. Just take your crack pipe and go home! Get outta here, Danny!

Todd O'Conner: Yeah, go shoot somebody with a gun!

Bill Swerski: Alright, now let's get back to our discussion. Bears vs. the Assembled Choir of Heavenly Angels.

Pat Arnold: The whole choir?

Bill Swerski: Well, Saraphone, Jerebone - the whole nine yards.

Pat Arnold: Angels.

Carl Wollarski: Angels, but it's close.

Todd O'Conner: Bears!

Bill Swerski: Alright. Ditka vs. God in a golf match. Now, he's a good golfer.

Pat Arnold: Ditka.

Todd O'Conner: Dit-ka!

Carl Wollarski: Ditka.

You left out my favorite one, about Hurricane Ditka. Classic stuff.

I never thought of looking at it that way.

So lets say X is made up of CCH, SK, and Beechwood.

T is made up of HHS, Boone, and NewCath. This would even out the enrollments.

Wow! It kind of makes you wonder what is so special about any of the championships X or T wins.

Exactly.....:thumb:

Oh boy, this could get ugly.:scared:

If you broke St. X and Trinity up into smaller schools and played Highlands, Sk, NCC, and Beechwood im going to take the NKY teams. That explains this whole debate thing, the enrollment. If you combine Highlands, Sk, NCC, and Beechwood and played X or T im taking NKY. NKY all the way baby. Louisville wouldnt be so dominant if their schools enrollment wasn't so high.:fire::fight:

I would say that overall the football in NKY is better, but X and Trinity are better than anything NKY has to offer. This is not to say Highlands isnt a great football team; they are. I don't think anyone can say otherwise. But I think both X and Trinity would be able to beat Highlands.

To be honest, that enrollment isn't that high. I went to a HS with close to 4000 people. If combining them gives them 2800, then each school has 1400? TBH, NKY has LOW enrollment. I was shocked when I heard the size of some of my friends senior classes.

Would Highlands or Beechwood be so dominant if they weren't Independents with most of he same advantages that the privates have?

Would Trinity and St.X have been so dominant if they weren't Catholic schools with all male enrollment?

Would Neo still have taken the red pill?

Would Japan have still attacked Pearl Harbor had they known that the carrier group was not in port?

Would PepRock have posted as many hypotheticals if they weren't all as irrelevant to the topic at hand as the initial one?

I am going to post something here I did in someone else's thread on this matter since we are getting more action here:

It really all depends on how you look at it.

Trinity and St.X are heads and shoulders above anyone and everyone in Louisville more often than not. Quite often they are like that across the state. Louisville has some other, solid, squads but they often run afoul of Trinity and St.X as most of the best teams in Louisville are all in 6A. Central is really the only other squad in Louisville with consistent talent to make any noise at any other level. CAL, Holy Cross, DeSales and Western can all be good every so often but they are not consistent and certainly not close to their counterparts in their respective classes.

NKY has been traditionally weak at the top in 6A/4A(prior to the reclassification). Boone County was once a powerhouse but never managed to capture a title. All other NKY big schools have really paled in comparison to what Boone County used to be and none have really had the kind of success that the Rebels did either. NKY's biggest strength has been the other classes. For years they had dominant teams in Beechwood, NCC, CovCath and Highlands with the Bluebirds and Tigers being the most successful. And for the most part all three of those teams have stayed dominant and successful. One could argue that Highlands is and has been on par with the big Catholics down in Louisville and that is a legitimate claim with their 17 state titles and constant dominance in what was 3A and now is 5A they are no slouch. Also something to note is that Bob Beatty's first game as Trinity's head coach was actually a defeat at the hands of the Bluebirds in 2000.

One of the interesting things to look at in this demographic though is that we are talking about dramatically different situations when comparing NKY and Louisville; especially at the public level. NKY is a number of different counties spread across an area similar in size to Jefferson County(which coincidentally is the city limits of Louisville) and they have a number of different school systems with little to no intermixing as far as attendance is concerned. Which leads to, if there is a superlative class in one area, a program achieving a high level of success for a while then dropping off. Which could happen in Louisville, but often these talents would end up dispersed to many schools where their impact would not be as dramatic therefore diluting the pool because of sheer size. This is of course not taking into account the Independent school systems and the private schools. Interestingly enough the only programs with considerable success in this area.

Louisville on the other hand, being 1 continuous school system with open enrollment leads to some interesting developments and shifts in football prowess at some schools, since anyone can pretty much attend any school. For a time just about anyone who looked like a good football player could get into Male with little trouble. Recently the JCPS has come down on practices like that and now only students who have come through the Traditional program are admitted. Male has traditionally been the power in Louisville for the JCPS and due to these enrollment restrictions you find less talent there than even 2 years ago. The teams that are really starting to pick up are Manual, who has considerable potential, and obviously Central. Ballard has a new coach who looks to really bring the Bruins up to their potential as well. The prospects are quite good for a number of programs in the Louisville area over the next few years.

However since we are talking about top to bottom I still find it quite difficult to give you a legitimate and non-homerish response. Not so much because I am incapable of detaching myself from my school loyalty but more so because we are much more top heavy in Louisville. If you take the top two squads from both areas it is essentially a wash. Trinity and Highlands are almost equal in state titles and success throughout the years. That leaves St.X then with a considerable drop to the next tier of Manual, Central and Ballard, then another considerable drop to Male and Eastern. If we compare them simply school to school that would be interesting but if we are going by total success then it would be hard to pick Louisville over NKY. While Trinity and St.X have a combined 29 state titles in football, and I don't think you can find any other town with two schools who can claim that kind of dominance, we drop to about 5 for Male after that and I am not entirely sure how many Manual has. Although they DO have a national title to their credit from around 50 years ago.

If I had to pick I would probably say NKY but only because of success in more than 2 classes. I think if you took the top 2 or 3 squads in both areas and played them against each other regularly that Louisville would probably win more often than not, but it is hypothetical and we cannot prove anything one way or another there. Quality of teams historically is another conundrum I touched on here that would take another LONG post that I don't feel like writing at the moment after all this.

ADD: I'm special. I didn't know X and T were ALL BOYS schools. lol. Ooops.

The highest enrollment at either school is around 1400, still smaller than what you were used to.

Keep in mind that those 1400 students in those two school are all male. So when you say only 2800, realistically to get the same numbers from the public schools, they would have to be pulled from some 5600 students.:scared:

You grow up in Florida, or the North East or something?
