She wasn't elected as Senator from NY in her first term on her own merits.

That is true. It is also true that Hillary's experience pales in comparison to most former Secretaries of State. However, experience is not everything. Who would you rather have as Secretary of State, Hillary or Joe Biden, a man who has been wrong on virtually every foreign policy issue of the past 30 years?

I don't know. 8 strong years at Secretary of State would better prepare her for a Presidential run in 2016 than a Senate position for the same amount of time.

 

They get peace somewhere and the Clintons will be taking the credit instead of giving it to Obama.

 

From the Clintons perspective, how much talk has been about her in the past month. No, it is about Obama, Reid and Pelosi. She could very easily become a background player and out of the spotlight. And out of the spotlight is a very uncomfortable spot for the Clintons.

 

Can't imagine this one, despite the rumors? First of all, name a SOS that came back to become President--Monroe, Adams, Madison--No one in about 200 years?? I can't imagine her being a relevent candidate in 8 years, but I've been known to be wrong?

 

I also agree its hard to imagine her becoming a "bit player" behind the big 3 above; and I really don't think she and Obama like one another too much?? I see her staying in her Senate seat, and getting a powerful committee appointment. And maybe Bill as "Ambassador to ????" (Is there an all female country out there somewhere )

A Secretary of State can be fired. No potential 2012 presidential candidate should accept a cabinet position under Obama, IMO.

Hillary may become Secretary of State, but Monica has already served as Secretary of the Interior. ;)

If it gets her out of the Senate, he can appoint her Ambassador to Mars! Seriously, she would be a better choice than Kerry.

 

People seem to be joking about Bill being appointed in some capacity. He is young enough and is definitely popular enough and it wouldnt be setting a precedent. We have had ex pres's serve again in Congress and on the Supreme Court. I dont see anything wrong with Clinton continuing to serve his country if he chooses to. Goodness knows they have enough money now!

Based on the number of stories that indicate that Hillary will be offered the job and she will accept, I might have to re-think my original scepticism.

 

I still don't see the SOS job as being that good of a stepping stone to the Presidency. Early in this country's history that was true (Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams) but the last time a former SOS became president was 150 years ago. (James Buchanan)

I don't think his ego would allow him to serve well in most positions. While I would prefer others I think Hillary would do well as SOS.

CHICAGO - Former President Bill Clinton has offered several concessions to help Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, his wife, become secretary of state, people familiar with President-elect Barack Obama's transition vetting process said Wednesday.

 

Clinton has agreed to release the names of several major donors to his charitable foundation and will submit future foundation activities and paid speeches to a strict ethics review, said Democrats knowledgeable about the discussions.

 

They also said that Clinton would step away from day-to-day responsibility for his foundation while his wife serves and would alert the State Department any new sources of income and to his speechmaking. The Democrats spoke only on grounds of anonymity because of the private nature of the Cabinet-selection process.
