November 8, 200817 yr I was surprised there has not been any negative reaction to Obama, a bi-racial child, referring to himself as a mutt. I thought for sure that someone of biracial heritage would find it offensive that Obama considers himself a biracial person as a mutt. I personally find using that term to refer to a person of biracial heritage as very offensive. Heck, he apologized to Nancy Reagan but nothing wrong with the "mutt" comment? Is the term mutt an appropriate term to use?
November 8, 200817 yr Author He can refer to himself as whatever he wants, I do not care. That is the blind loyalness that W's supporters were lamblasted for having. Back to the topic, I guess I was more "disappointed" that he would refer to a bi-racial person as a mutt more than anything.
November 8, 200817 yr Honestly, LBBC. What is the big deal? He made a joke at his own expense. I don't understand why you're taking offense.
November 8, 200817 yr Author Honestly, LBBC. What is the big deal? He made a joke at his own expense. I don't understand why you're taking offense. I don't like racial jokes in any form or fashion. I would be surprised if any bi-racial person would like the idea that they are a "mutt." It is wrong should be called out as wrong so that young people today do not think it is appropriate. I deal with too much of racial stupidity to accept it in any form or fashion.
November 8, 200817 yr I don't like racial jokes in any form or fashion. I don't think it's a racial joke. It's a heritage joke. I refer to myself as a mutt all the time. My ex-husband's family was 50% Irish, 50% Italian. My family was Irish, Scottis, German, Cherokee Indian, and we're sure there are other heritages but we don't know what they were. You're making a mountain out of a mole hill.
November 8, 200817 yr As a side note, when did he say this? I have been out of the loop for a couple of days.

The obvious makeup of Obama is black and white. I hope that his Presidency moves us further past these racial problems and him started with a "mutt" comment did not set well with me. I mutt dog is a dog that is looked down because it is not a pure-bred dog. I don't like that implication at all. If one of my student's refer to him as a "mutt," I will be upset and come down on them just as if they used the n word. That is simply what I am saying.
November 8, 200817 yr Author As a side note, when did he say this? I have been out of the loop for a couple of days. When they asked him about his dog, he pointed out that one of his kids were allergic. They wanted a shelter dog but most shelter dogs are mutts like him. And not hypoallergen dogs.
November 8, 200817 yr As a side note, when did he say this? I have been out of the loop for a couple of days. Obama made the remark as he revealed his thinking in what is becoming one of the highest-profile issues of this transition period: What kind of puppy will he and his wife, Michelle, get for their daughters as they move into the White House. Because Malia, 10, has allergies, the family wants a low-allergy dog. But Obama said they also want to adopt a puppy from an animal shelter, which could make it harder to find a breed that wouldn't aggravate his daughter's problem. "Obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me," Obama said with a smile. "So whether we're going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27606637

You do realize that white people have varied heritages as well. I don't look down on mutts. I don't know very many "pure bred" people. The ones I do are more apt to look down on people mutts, than people mutts being ashamed of their lack of "pure bredity". I don't believe that hypersensitivity to such an obviously self-depracating comment is warranted.

I know how they will take the comment and it is wrong. They are stupid, stupid people and I don't like comments like this.
