One warning though, bass strings are expensive. $30-60 for a good set of strings. Depending on how much you play, they need to be changed anywhere from every month to every 6 months.

Use ice, not heat. Heat will increase the blood flow to the area thereby increasing the swelling. Take an anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen(Advil) or Naproxen Sodium(Aleve) and then let a doctor take a look at it.
