I smashed my left index finger tonight at my band's practice. I was lifting a 90 pound amplifier out of the back of our van and lost my grip and ended up smashing my finger.

 

It's not broken, but it is starting to bruise and it looks like there is a cut under my fingernail. During practice it was still numb and didn't hurt too bad to play, but now it is sore and hurts to type.

 

We have some really big shows coming up this weekend and I need to use this finger to play. Specifically, it is on my hand that holds down the strings. Is there anything I can do to help my finger recover faster? Ice it down? Apply heat? Again, I really need this finger starting Saturday so anything to alleviate the pain or help it recover faster would be good.

You may end up with blood collecting under your fingernail. It this happens, the pressure will need to be relieved or you're going to be in a lot of pain...and your barre chords are going to sound like a train wreck.

Drill a small hole in your fingernail above where the blood is collecting. Letting it out will be a huge relief. It doesn't have to be a big hole, either. Just a small opening going all the way thru the nail. Good luck and rock on!

As for your finger, see what it's like in the morning. If your nail is throbing and turning colors, I'd get it looked at. Actually, I'd get it looked at anyway, if it means risking not being able to play.

If you wait to long the blood will push the nail off of it's matrix and you will lose it. If there is any discoloration in the nail at all blood is collecting under it.

 

Also, improper draining can cause an infection. Let a doctor do it.
