Ryan Ernst: Q&A with Bellevue's Mike Herald

Featured Replies

From today's enquirer:

Question: What's it like as a Dayton grad, coaching at Bellevue?

Answer: It's going great - we haven't lost a game yet, and no parents are upset.

Q: Bellevue junior Hunter Jones, the son of former Reds player Tracy Jones, transferred in last season and established himself as one of the area's best baseball players. Is he playing basketball for you this season?

A: Yeah, he has been at practice and is doing a great job.

Q: You took the 2007-08 season off. What did you do with your time away?

A: I applied for a couple of jobs; they didn't work out. My ace in the hole was my son being the assistant head coach at Batavia, and I was hoping to be the head coach at Walnut Hills. When the Bellevue job opened up, I applied and got it.

Q: Who are some of the best players you've ever coached?

A: Michael Romes at Beechwood, who currently plays at Mount St. Joseph, was probably the best player I have coached.

Q: What was the best game you've ever coached or played in?

A: At Beechwood, we beat Central Hardin in the finals of the (2005) Campbell County Christmas tournament to win the tournament. It was a great game.

Q: Which is your favorite gym to play in?

A: Covington Catholic's gym is my favorite. Their fans are so organized, and they really make it fun. There is an appreciation for the game at that school.

Q: What is the outlook for this year?

A: Hard to say right now. We are still missing some players, but we think that we can be really good. We've got a lot of good players this year, and we think we can compete for the conference and the All "A" (Ninth Region) Tournament (titles).

This Q&A must have been done over the phone, The only place he can drive to is CCH.

I would say that is a bold prediction, Bellevue lost a lot of players last season.

Apparently the only two schools Ernst really follows are Covcath and Highlands.

It is a shame that so many good teams and players can't have stories written about them, but it seems Ryan is infatuated with a certain school or two. It is also sad that he won't discuss this with anyone who will take the time to call him. He won't take the call and he will not return it either. We may need to take a collection to get gas money for him so he can drive further South , East, and even West.

I agree to an extent. He has covered Holmes heavily the past couple years throughout the basketball season and from what I heard, his interview with Dave Henley was actually a face to face interview at a Holmes practice. As far as football and baseball and other sports go, you're correct.

Or maybe it's the fact that Highlands and CovCath are typically in the top 3 in both football and basketball. In addition, those teams usually play the tougher schedules and players from around the state. I am pretty certain Ryan came to Silver Grove multiple times to do stories on Corey Pelle. People want to read about the top teams and players. If you want coverage, work on your game and get better.

Couldn't agree anymore.

I would happen to disagree. This is not a pro team where an entire area wants to read about that one team ,they want to read about their school or their kids or their grand kids school. They could care less about reading about one or two other schools on a daily basis. I don't remember reading much about Brossart, Campbell, SK, Scott just to name a few who made it into Reginals in a couple of differrent sports over the past few years. The Kentucky Post did a much better job than what we have seen since it ended circulation.
