October 28, 200817 yr Game 1: Cole Hamels clearly balked but nothing was called. Run would have scored. Game 2: Check swing by Roco Baldelli should have been strike 3. Run scored. Game 3: Crawford called safe at first, but replay clearly showed that Moyer's flip to first base made it in plenty of time. Game 4: Rays 3rd baseman Evan Longoria swipes the back of Jimmy Rollins as he slides back to 3rd base and was ruled safe. Run scores. Umps have admitted to mistakes made in games 3 and 4. Umpire reasoning for missed swipe tag is because he said he didn't see a pause of the glove after swiping Rollins.
October 28, 200817 yr I just seen on ESPN that the Umps admitted to making the mistakes. When you do that, it just proves that the call you made was terrible.
October 28, 200817 yr Author And just a few minutes ago, Burrell at bat and it was a 2-2 count, the next 2 pitches were strikes but were called balls and Burrell gets the walk. Horrible umpiring.

It takes a lot for me to get on an ump or ref because I have done it and know how hard it is. These guys have been bad IMO.
October 28, 200817 yr I don't think it has been too horrible. They're human, and we're watching it over & over & over again and in slow motion. Baseball calls are not made in slow motion. The strike zone does not have a box around it that shows where the pitch was. It's easy to make the right call everytime when you're sitting at home drinking a beer. There were a few calls that I disagreed with (mostly balls & strikes), but that's about it. Overall, I felt it was pretty consistent, which is all you can ask for. The call at 3rd on Longoria was bad. The call that made the Ray's player safe at first when Jamie Moyer dove and flipped the ball to Ryan Howard (who bare-handed it) was a bad call. But that was quick & I think the ump was caught off guard by the barehanded catch.

And these umps are supposed to be the best of the best if they are umping a World Series, and so far they have been below average..I'm not trying to say I could do their job perfectly, but I've seen a lot of strikes called for Phillies pitchers that wasn't called for the Rays... The umpire should be in the best position possible to make the call. He was in the right position, but the flip from Moyer to Howard was a bang bang play. And Howard's 6'4'' 256 pound frame may have played a role in preventing the umpire to see the play as clearly as possible.
