I have a question. Would the US have been worried about tanks being sold to Somalia for any reason? Could the pirate thing be a smoke screen to provide the tanks to Somalia somehow?

I was thinking more along the lines of an excuse to send war ships into the region.

I've been waiting to hear something like this. If the US sent in anyone covertly, this is exactly the type of thing I would expect to be reported. Not saying it's happened yet just saying it wouldn't surprise me either way. Regardless it sounds like the pirates may need to think about abandoning ship.
