Based on the way you described this play, it's too late to correct the error because the ball became live when Team B completed their throw in after the made basket by A2.

 

However, had the officials realized the mistake before Team B got the ball in play, they could have corrected the error. If they catch it during that time (first dead ball after the clock had started on the rebound by A2) A2's basket would still count AND A1 is getting his/her merited second free throw. By rule, points scored and time that runs off the clock which occur before the recognition of an error isn't nullified.

 

In this scenario, A2's basket counts, you're going to award A1 his/her merited second free throw with the lane cleared and Team B will get the throw in w/ the end line to run regardless of if the second free throw is successful b/c it goes back to the point of interruption (after A2's made basket).

 

I also wouldn't be suprised if this was followed by 2 free throws for team A after Team B's coach gets a technical when you tell him/her that A2's basket still counts even though you goofed.

I think most would be surprised to learn that the basket counts in both situations and in the second A also gets the FT.

First I think it's fair to say that time expired in this scenario because there was a rebound, a pass of approximately 40 feet, a shot of approximately 40 feet, and the clock doesn't stop once the ball goes through the hoop.

 

Errors may be corrected if discovered after the first dead ball and before the clock properly starts after that first dead ball period. In this case, the made basket and time after the final horn are the dead ball period so the error could be corrected.

I'm not doubting you are correct, but are you sure the final horn can be considered a dead ball period if the score isn't tied? Sometimes when I'm dumb, I'm stubborn as well.

You are partially correct and ultimately got it right. However, the final buzzer does not end the chance to correct a correctable error.

Its my understanding that after the horn the official checks with the desk to see if there are any issues. If so, they go to the desk and correct them. If not they get out the door and at that point nothing can be changed.

Is this the one where you get 2 shots per foul where it is a 3 point shot. I know if it's a 2 point shot you get one shot per foul! But don't remember what the 3 point penalty will be for a multiple foul!

You are correct, two shots per foul. Shooter gets 4 shots.

If the 2nd foul occurred BEFORE the ball went in, I'll say the shot is good and then A1 shoots the "and 1." If they are still not in the bonus as a result of the 2nd foul, I'll say A takes the ball out of bounds after they shoot the FTs.

 

If the 2nd foul occurred AFTER the ball went in, the second foul would be ignored since its during a dead ball situation unless it was a flagrant foul.
