What's the Call: Very Interesting

Featured Replies

In Clyde's first post, it says "Bonus", not double bonus, so I would have to say that means, 1 and 1. So it is correct that the rebound, pass, shot, horn goes off, basket goes in, 3 pointer counts. Team B up by 2, correctable error, but do to the fact that the shot will not change the outcome of the game, it will not be shot, Game Over!

Now lets change it a point and say, if Team A would of been up 2 points when this happens, it gets really fun, because the free throw would have to go back and be shot with no one on the line and no time remaining, if it goes in you have overtime, if it's missed, now the game is over! Interesting scenario.

You are wrong it says double bonus at the last! :ylsuper:

MOH read it correctly. The desk initially said that they were in the "bonus" which for clarification was meant to be 1-and-1. They later notified the official that it should have been the double bonus.

Lets change it up.

A1 fouled and is shooting 1 and 1. A1 misses. A2 rebounds the missed FT and sticks it back in. B1 takes the ball out and throws to B2 who is fouled. B is not in the bonus.

Hold up. Desk says that A should have been shooting double bonus.

Now what?

A1 would not receive his/her second merited free throw, and the goal by A2 counts. The clock properly started (on the rebound), the ball became dead (made basket by A2) and then the ball became live on the throw-in by Team B.

Since the ball became live again after that made basket by A2, the time period to correct the error had passed. Had the officials caught the error between A2's basket and the subsequent throw-in by Team B, they could have cancelled A2's goal, awarded A1 his/her second free throw and play would resume from that action.

Color me impressed.

Thanks for the catch there. You are correct that it is B shooting the 3 and not A.

Why do you say "B" wins?

I assume you mean A called a TO after B made the basket. If so, you are partially correct but not completely correct on what to do.

My take on the whole thing, and again this is off the top of my head, is once the final horn sounds, all correctable errors become uncorrectable. I.E. even if team B had only taken a one point lead with the three pointer, team A wouldn't get the second foul shot because the final horn sounded.

A little help.

The 3 point goal is good. This is a correctable error situation where A1 could be awarded his/her second free throw. However, since time had expired, Team B is up by 2 and the second merited free throw will have no effect on the outcome of the game, A1 is not awarded his second free throw and team B wins by 2.

So to answer the 3 questions you asked, 1) No 2) Yes 3)No

Once the final horn sounds, I think the correctable error portion of this example ends. What do you think?

Yes this is true... However, the origional post says nothing about the clock expiring.

First I think it's fair to say that time expired in this scenario because there was a rebound, a pass of approximately 40 feet, a shot of approximately 40 feet, and the clock doesn't stop once the ball goes through the hoop.

Errors may be corrected if discovered after the first dead ball and before the clock properly starts after that first dead ball period. In this case, the made basket and time after the final horn are the dead ball period so the error could be corrected.

It can be assumed but it wasnt stated as many said it was. I agree with your ruling, BTW.

You are partially correct and ultimately got it right. However, the final buzzer does not end the chance to correct a correctable error.

Nice work.

The officials always glance at the table before leaving the confines of the court. If the score keeper/timer is standing, most of the time that means they have a problem and to not leave until it gets corrected. But whatever the sign is that the book is not right needs to be commuicated between the officials and the official scorers so they don't leave when there is a correction to be made after the game, because corrections can be made until the officials leave the confines of the court, then after that all changes are over..

Lets change it up one more time.

A1 gets fouled (non shooting). Ref signals 1 and 1. A1 misses the first FT but A2 rebounds the miss and puts it in. B1 takes it out of bounds and throws it into B2. While B2 is dribbling the official blows his whistle and stops play because the desk has told him that it should have been a double bonus instead of a one-and-one.

Do I have to give someone else a shot? :p

There are about 3 of us playing so have at it.

I'm about to blow your mind....

Based on the way you described this play, it's too late to correct the error because the ball became live when Team B completed their throw in after the made basket by A2.

However, had the officials realized the mistake before Team B got the ball in play, they could have corrected the error. If they catch it during that time (first dead ball after the clock had started on the rebound by A2) A2's basket would still count AND A1 is getting his/her merited second free throw. By rule, points scored and time that runs off the clock which occur before the recognition of an error isn't nullified.

In this scenario, A2's basket counts, you're going to award A1 his/her merited second free throw with the lane cleared and Team B will get the throw in w/ the end line to run regardless of if the second free throw is successful b/c it goes back to the point of interruption (after A2's made basket).

I also wouldn't be suprised if this was followed by 2 free throws for team A after Team B's coach gets a technical when you tell him/her that A2's basket still counts even though you goofed. :)
