Track the Cubs (Week 23)

Mets beat the Brewers AGAIN for the sweep.

That's where the good news ends for the Cubs, Milwaukee will now play their next 7 games against the Padres and Reds. You figure they will go at least 5-2 or better in that stretch.

The Cubs seem to have a very shaky rotation now, an offense that goes into hiding more often than a celebrity goes into rehab and history that documents very well how things usually end for the Cubs.

I was thinking about it today and this does remind me of the White Sox a little bit back in 2005. The Sox led the Central all year and starting in August they really started struggling. That was added to the fact that the Indians were playing really, really well.

You get down to two weeks to go in the season and the Indians had cut the Sox lead down to a game or maybe a half game at that point. With one week to go the Sox had a 2 game lead and were finally able to win, mainly because the Indians went in the tank. It's ironic because the last three games of that season were in Cleveland. Sound familiar?

I just hope to goodness this lead doesn't get down to a game or so, I don't know if I would ever be the same if this somehow slipped away from them.

I was just getting ready to post the Milwaukee score. 19 seems like a long way away...

So the Cubs entered tonight's game in desperate need of a win before a long road trip.

They suffer a complete game shut out by a guy who hadn't thrown a complete game in 4 years.

The Brewers get to enjoy batting practice against the worst team in baseball and the Cubs go on the road with a lot of questions and a lot of doubt.

I can literally feel myself getting more and more physically ill as this plays out.

I saw this happening back in May when they enjoyed a big lead. This is a killer stretch of games for them.

They've had to skip Harden's start to give him 12 days rest. Zambrano was examined by a doctor today and is supposed to have an MRI, possibly Thursday. Getting nervous yet? Rough times

I may jump off the Paducah Metropolis bridge if they blow this

I'm scared to death that Z has a torn labrum, or something. I think it is a real possibility that he is gone for the season. I had a really bad feeling that it was more than just his usual August funk.

As bad as it hurts, a playoff rotation of Dempster, Harden and Lilly with the occasional Marshall or Marquis is still capable if the offense heats back up

If Z is gone for the rest of the year and Harden follows suit, at least the Cubs would have a viable excuse for not winning this year.

Sure, you could blame the curse or whatever else, but at least it wouldn't be because the Cubs were fully healthy and flat out choking. We have all been through this before with this team, it's always SOMETHING and it's no real surprise that a dream season could end horribly because of injuries.

Big Z has rotator cuff tendinitis, Hendry is saying he can make his next start at Houston. Personally, I wouldn't rush him back.

So it appears everything MIGHT be okay with him, now let's find out about Harden.

They aren't saying anything is wrong with Harden, just giving him extra rest cause velocity was down in his last outing, which is what happened right before he came over from the A's, I'm not worried bout him at all. I say give Z 2 weeks rest and have him fresh for the Playoff with 2 starts prior to the playoffs to shake off any rust and lets make this push.

I'm not giving up on these boys yet, even at less that full strength they still have the best team in the NL. Just need Lee and Soriano to start hitting more. Does no good for guys like Theriot, Derosa and Johnson to get on base if they can't knock them in!

The only way to look at the series sweep by the Astros it that nothing went the Cubs way, they struggled and are playing their worst baseball of the year.

With all that, they still have a 4 and half game lead. They need to finish this 9 game road trip with at least a 3 or 4 game lead, if it ends up being more than that's fine too.

I do not want to go into that Brewers series at Wrigley with the Cubs only holding a 1 game lead. They won't sweep that team again.

Hardin has some discomfort, which is why they pushed him back.

Zambrano has rotater cuff tendonitis. For Zambrano, it means a shot and maybe a week off. For Mark Prior, it would have meant retirement.

I did read up on rotater cuff tendonitis and it said that it could eventually lead to chronic pain and then possibly a tear. I just hope to goodness Z is honest if he feels pain again, they cannot afford to have any kind of tear.

It is nice that after five days of everything seemingly going wrong, they get a little bit of good news today.
