Schools can send letters to a player Sep. 1 of their Jr year but can not send e mails, text messages or phone them until their Sr. year. A player of any age can phone a college coach at any time or as often as they want but the coach can not return calls. A player of any age can make as many unofficial (paid for by the parent) visits they want. Once the player is on campus coaches can make any contact they want with the high school player. None of this keeps a college coach from making contact with a 3rd party requesting a high school player to call them.

The way I understand it:

A college may only call a student/athlete one time in the junior year in May. And can not contact them again until September of their senior year. Now with that said, the student/athlete can call the coaches as many times as the player wants to.

There is a great book that I have that explains the entire recruiting process, it is cheap and can be ordered in any book store. "The Next Level" by Joe Hornback.

Any prospective student-athlete is eligible to receive College/University information through the mail at any time. Phone calls from Coaches, Faculty or Students, are not permitted until July 1 after completion of the Junior year. These calls are limited to (1) per week with exceptions, during Official Visit and Off-Campus visits. A student-athlete may call a coach as often as he/she likes.

A college coach may “contact” a student athlete in person off campus only after July 1, completion of the Junior year in high school. Any face to face meeting between a college coach and the player/parents of a player, is considered a “contact”. Coaches are permitted (3) Off-Campus contacts.

An evaluation is any off campus activity used to assess a student athlete’s academic and/or athletic abilities. A Coach may not make more than (4) evaluations during each academic year.

A good way to get your kid seen is to send him to the summer camps held by the colleges. The earlier the better...and if an underclassman, return to the camp the next year. The coaches get familiar with the player and vice versa!! Lots of kids get "offered" out of camps! You should also go online and fill out the prospect questionaires that ALL the colleges have on their site.

Aren't there different rules depending on if the school is NCAA or NAIA?

I think that they are different and to make it worse the rules appear to be different for basketball also. You can go to the NCAA web site but its about as clear as mud.

You are correct and there are "dead" and "quiet" periods, which vary in many Sports.

I agree send them to camps. There are a lot of guest coaches at camps, that is how my son was noticed and now plays at the next level.

This may be true but unless your kid really shines with on average over 100 kids at these camps there is no way a coach can pick them out.

I'll respectfully disagree. If a player has the ability, desire and talent to play at a certain Division, he will be seen at the Camps. He may not be right for that level of play though.

If a camp is sincerely looking and he's blending in, not being noticed there there is a reason. Don't limit yourself to all one level of play. It just takes one school, regardless of level to like you.

You have to look at position as well. Out of those 100 players, how many play his position? If he is a lineman, probably 30 of those are linemen. Now a college may recruit 10 linemen, now he only has to be 10 out of 30. Plus, if there is multiple colleges present, that increases your chances.

Agreed. But you need to mix up the levels of the schools you are looking at. For instance, if you send them to all D1 camps, and your kid isn't D1 material (which is hard for you to see sometimes), then you won't get an offer.

Next season, my kid will attend a few D3 and D2 camps, then maybe a D1 or two her Junior year.
