I thought 10-15 years ago that he was going to end up being a Republican candidate in the future.

Lieberman is a liberal on almost every issue except terrorism and the Iraq War. McCain is smart enough not to put a Democrat on his ticket. He is already going to have trouble with conservatives turning out to vote for him, naming a Democrat as his running mate would just confirm our worst fears about him.

I don't recall the period length, but the last fundraising report article I read (this week) had McCain and the RNC outraising Obama and the DNC for the period. It might not be as bad as you think.

I think a lot of GOP's would stay home or cast a protest ballot for Barr. McCain would not consider a Democrat.

I agree; he's really in a tough situation. He needs to excite the conservative base and yet he has to remain distant from anything Bush so as to appeal to Independents and moderates. He has courted nut-cases like Hagee and Parsley for over a year in order to be more appealing to evangelicals and now the pastors have unendorsed him, probably further alienating him from some conservatives.Combine this with McCain-Feingold and McCain-Kennedy, the fact that he is older than Rip Van Winkle and as charismatic as Joe Liebermann, and it's easy to see why not too many people are excited about him. He does have an attractive, rich wife. Maybe that will excite a few Republicans.

Friar Huck excited you, LBBC. Why do you think more were excited by McCain(Feingold)? I don't believe they were terribly excited by him(again, you know it) nor are they overly excited by him now.

If McCain had excited Republicans he would be getting more than 70-75% of the vote in the primaries after everybody else suspended or abandoned their active campaigns.

Abandonment issues when it comes to party politics is underwhelming, at best. It's a common theme and a much sexier topic for Povich and Springer , though.
