This isn't for spouting the same out rhetorical baloney. It's about finding ways to make responsible progress.

Not all of us feel we need all that much more progress. I think we've done quite nicely, that's all I'm saying.

I'm in the middle. That's why I wanted to start this dialog. When it come to our environment and wildlife, we have too much finger pointing and ear plugging going on in this country. If we don't start talking about these issues, nothing will ever happen.

Yep, burnt a tree in honor of Earth Day. I also dug a big, deep hole for all the eco-nuts so they could throw themselves in enabling them to "become one with Mother Earth". Just think of how they can reduce their carbon footprint. :thumb:

First let me say that I believe that the notion of manmade global warming is hogwash, so there will be no middle ground found in that area with those who believe that CO2 emissions have created a crisis that threatens to roast us alive.

 

One of my biggest concerns about the global warming (a/k/a "climate change") manufactured crisis is that it diverts attention and resources away from real, provable environmental threats.

 

My biggest environmental concern by far is the pollution and overfishing of our oceans. Common sense tells me that we (the global community) are slowly poisoning our oceans. Maybe it's my imagination, but the North Atlantic cod fillets at Long John Silver's and other seafood restaurants have been shrinking. I have read historical accounts about how much larger fish caught of the same species a century ago versus the puny catches of today.

 

The earth has survived multiple ice ages and many balmy periods in the past but never has any species dumped endless amounts of toxins into the ocean as we are today. Much has been done to cleanup our rivers that feed into the ocean from the US over the past three decades but the developing and third-world countries need to be making a much better effort.

 

Although much remains to be done, the environmental movement needs to call off the global warming power grab (event the Bush administration and John McCain are on the bandwagon) and focus on cleaning up our oceans. I know that the fight against baby seal clubbing and anti-whaling initiatives make for good press, but unregulated pollution is a much bigger threat to all aquatic life and we should be working equally hard to save plankton, snails, and eels as we are to save the whales.

My pitch for "middle ground" is the case for cleaning up the oceans and working to reduce commercial fishing to a sustainable level so that we can continue to sink our teeth into something larger than an anchovy.

 

I cannot recall encountering anybody who disputes that too much filth is pouring into our planet's oceans. If anybody wants to debate that topic, then I will put on my environmentalist hat and bring some data to the table.
