How did St. X's freshman team due today I heard they were going up against Male? I know X beat them earlier in the year.

Male won 4-1. The kid for Male threw a gem.

Thanks Park,

Wished I was there sounds like it was a great game. Well at least X paid them back at the varsity level last night in a BIG district win.

Letsplay, it was only a great game if you're a Male fan, lol. We out hit Male I think 7-4. We lost a routine pop in right with the bases loaded, 2outs, due to the sun that scored 2. We had bases loaded, 1 out, hit a fly to left and our runner on third is going to score easily on the tag up. Our runner on second decides to tag as well and is thrown out before our other run scored. Double play, inning over. It should have been 4-2, with runners on first and second, 2outs and our 3 hitter at the plate. Their center fielder also ran down a well hit ball in the right center alley with 2 runners on earlier in the game. That's baseball. Give credit to Male for playing good defense and keeping X off balance at the plate.

How is James doing on the team? We played with him last year and he is great kid.

Who pitched for Male, Linville?

Who pitched for Male, Linville?

No, it wasn't Linville. I was told it was an 8th grader, Gray, who started and threw well for 5 innings. Brandon Allen closed for the save. In the first meeting we saw Laha and then Linville, X won 9-1.

Yeah, heard from the Male players that they did pitch Gray. He's an 8th grader at JCTMS who doesn't play for his school, instead he plays for a high school. I think this STINKS!!! JCPS needs to adopt a rule that if a kid isn't playing for the school he is enrolled at then he shouldn't be allowed to play at another school. What's to say this kid won't end up at Ballard or Manual next year. Anyone else think that kids should have to play for their school first, then they can play for someone else? No play for your school, no play for another school. Good or bad?

The question is whether you want what's best for the middle school team or what's best for an 8th grader's development. There's no question that kids like Gray will develop into better pitchers and players playing up against high school kids than they would playing against 7th and 8th graders. Gray beat X, a group of good 14 and 15 yr. old young men....what would he gain by dominating 12 and 13 year old boys? I would allow the kids to play up. If he goes to another school, so be it....it's a free country and he can go to whatever school he wants in Jefferson County. Unless open enrollment is changed I don't think an 8th grader should be punished or penalized for making a high school team then deciding to go somewhere else. That high school had a full season to prove they were the right program for the kid. I think it's acutally a nice way to take a look at a school before you're forced to choose.

We all know that the real development in ALL sports, except football, is done in the summer on the AAU circuit now. Any kid that has any amount of talent is playing AAU ball. Kids like Gray are playing for elite AAU teams and traveling all summer playing against the best in their area of the nation. So to say that allowing the kid to play up in high school is best for him doesn't make sense to me. Use the summer to play against elite competition. If it was really about the kid facing good competition wouldn't he be pitching at the varsity level? Wouldn't that make him better in the end according to your rationale? My point is that there is no SCHOOL PRIDE when you allow a kid to do this. All I would like is for all students, and they are students first since this is a school activity correct, to have to represent THEIR school before they can represent another school. Is it fair to the freshman at Male that got cut to lose a spot on THEIR SCHOOL team to a kid who doesn't attend that SCHOOL? If you want to play up do it in the summer. Play for your school first, since it is a SCHOOL sport.

Buford, I hear what you're saying. But, I'm not buying school pride as the reason to deny an 8th grader an opportunity to play high school baseball. How long has Jefferson County had middle school middle school baseball? Kinda of hard to have a lot of school pride and interest in a fledgling program. When my son was in 8th grade many of his teammates and opponents would miss their middle school games or leave early to make their AAU games. I look at CSAA middle school baseball which has been around for 50 plus years, it's pretty lame as far as competition goes. Kids serious about baseball ususally don't play CSAA baseball, or if they do it comes secondary to their club or rec team. Even if Jeff Co middle school baseball is super comeptitve, well coached, well organized, etc...do you honestly think a kid like Gray would benefit more by playing against 12 and 13 yr. olds versus 14 and 15 yr. olds?

Buford, at the risk of thread jacking I'll leave it that we just disagree on this one.
