St.Xavier vs Trinity Freshman

Featured Replies

You list 8 public high schools in Louisville, what about the other 14 high schools in Louisville? There are 22 high schools in Louisville, correct? Do the others not count since they aren't the elite schools in Louisville, no disrespect intended. Other than J-Town and Seneca, the rest of those schools could probably fill 10 teams if they wanted. Again, there are 14 other schools in Louisville, and I bet of those 14, at least 10 can't field a freshman team, or did you simply forget about those schools when you made your comment.

Buford,

Add Southern and Fairdale to the list of public Louisville high schools that have freshmen baseball teams that I know of based on looking at Manual and X's schedules There could be others. We now know of 10 for sure. What is your point?

Ten do then 12 don't. My issue was with the attitude that Letsplay made his post that he wasn't aware of any area teams that can't field a freshman team"!!!". Does this person really think that ALL schools have enough kids to field three teams. And how quickly you all are to dismiss the west end schools from this conversation. I guess I've been at one of the small schools too long and have grown to resent how quickly we are dismissed from conversations. I agree that lack of interest hurts these schools, but also the funding is just as big a contributor as lack of interest. And recruiting doesn't hurt either, but that's a topic for another day. I am at a middle school and we have trouble feilding a team for the public middle school league but we have four or five kids playing on freshmen teams at their prospective high schools. I feel like those kids should have to play for their school first, not a school they may or may not attend in the fall. Ask JCTMS how many of their kids are sitting as purple shirts at Male instead of playing for their school. Who wins, and is it fair to the kid's middle school and fellow classmates? I dare say the middle schools aren't the winners. And how did the middle school player find out about high school. I know it's not b.c the high school coach talked to him or his parents about playing ball. That would be illegal, wouldn't it. Just remember when you make a statement that ALL schools have a team you are probably going to make the little people upset. No real point to my post though, I'll admit. Blowing off steam b.c I HATE RAIN!!!! haha

Letsplay,

That was list was going on memory of who St.X's freshmen are playing this year. I'm sure most Jeff. Co. public schools have freshmen teams. The west end schools usually don't(Iroquois, Western, Shawnee, Central) field freshmen teams and are lucky if they have enough for a varsity. I think lack of interest is the issue at these schools. Most of the Oldham and Bullitt schools have teams at all three levels. As far as middle school kids, I'd take a good 8th grader over a bad ninth grader any day of the week. Some of the county schools do rely on middle schoolers to fill out their freshmen rosters.

I think that most public school teams will fill in using 8th graders to fill out the freshmen teams if they have them. Male uses "purple shirts" to designate additional players on the team that may improve and be on the main team in the future.

I have to believe that there are some 8th graders that could contribute. The level of competition they see playing summer select ball is much better than some of the freshman teams they will face.

I have seen some kids so far this season that appear to be in the 7th or maybe 8th grade on two public school teams. These kids may be good recreation players, but had no business being on a high school field.

In NKY there were at least a dozen kids that were 8th graders and played at the freshmen level (some at JV and a few at Varsity). This goes for Single A schools all they way to 6A schools (although that should not matter, they're all in the same class in KY, but that's a different story). These kids mostly played for 14u AABC teams in the summer, and had the benefit of playing excellent talent. IMO, their 14u summer teams would beat a majority (over half) of the HS frosh teams most of the time and give any team a run for their money. In the NKY frosh tourney final last year between the two teams, Beechwood and Conner, there were at least 6 starters that were 7th and 8th graders.

For those of you in the Louisville area, I know of the Bulls and the Lightning last summer, two great teams, that traveled to NKY and played... they lost some and won some, but you get the idea of the talent of some 8th graders.

At the JV level, many blend in well as far as skills go, but they stand out because they don't have hair on their face.

There are a few that blend in well at the V level (same goes about the facial hair).

Louisville Longhorns 13u USSSA World Series runner -up last year have I think 7 kids off that team playing high school ball. Three at St.Xavier, Two at Trinity and one at Manual and Ballard. All kids start.
